What is the purpose of this position?

As the primary advocate for sustainability and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction initiatives within the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), you will play a crucial role in promoting and facilitating the formulation of long-term strategies and policy measures. This position is pivotal in steering RDG towards becoming a sustainable organization that supports its members and stakeholders in their sustainability objectives while enhancing the growth of rail as an established eco-friendly mode of transport. You will engage extensively with key stakeholders across the rail industry and relevant external contacts.

What responsibilities will you have?

The following is a selection of key activities associated with this role:

1. Offer internal consultancy to project teams and personnel on sustainability, decarbonization, and related specialized topics, ensuring that RDG integrates carbon reduction into its business decisions.

2. Create and implement a comprehensive sustainability plan for RDG, reporting and escalating issues as necessary. Collaborate with the RDG communications team to ensure sustainability matters are prioritized across the organization.

3. Work in partnership with the Railway Strategy & Policy team to develop evidence-based policies for sustainability and decarbonization, engaging with government departments and RDG members as appropriate.

4. Assist in the development and implementation of the rail industry's Sustainable Rail Blueprint, coordinating RDG's involvement in the Sustainable Rail Leadership Group and associated Working Groups.

5. Address industry consultations in collaboration with RDG colleagues and industry stakeholders.

6. Prepare annual sustainability reports, ensuring comprehensive documentation of progress and initiatives.

7. Represent RDG at high-level industry meetings relevant to sustainability and decarbonization.

8. Provide expertise for industry-wide campaigns, assisting operators in meeting their sustainability commitments and representing RDG and its members in pertinent industry working groups.

9. Facilitate opportunities for cross-industry sharing of best practices and collaboration through discussion forums and events.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor's degree (or Master's) in Environmental Science or Sustainability is preferred.

· Demonstrated experience in formulating and executing sustainability and GHG reduction strategies, ideally within the transport sector.

· Familiarity with environmental regulations, industry standards, and best practices.

· Experience in long-term railway planning, funding, and investment.

· Understanding of regulatory and long-term planning processes in the GB rail industry or a regulated sector.
