Neonatal Care Unit Sister

Position Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to present an exceptional opportunity to join our dedicated team.
Role Responsibilities
The Southampton Neonatal Unit is seeking passionate and driven individuals to become part of our supportive 'Woodland Ward' Special Care leadership team at Band 6 level. We are in search of professionals who are committed to providing exceptional, family-focused care and who aspire to positively impact the lives of infants and their families.
As a Band 6 Sister, you will oversee the daily operations of Woodland Ward and lead the nursing team within our purpose-built, nurse-led Special Care Unit, which caters to critically ill and premature infants.
Unit Features:
- 16 cots, including 4 Family Integrated Care rooms
- A nurturing, safe, and welcoming environment for all
- Prioritization of patient and family needs; family involvement is central to our approach
- Facilities for parents to stay with their infants around the clock, promoting unrestricted access
- Support and guidance for parents in a compassionate setting, fostering strong bonds with their babies
About Our Organization
As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we provide numerous learning and development opportunities to help you achieve your career aspirations.
Our non-clinical roles may involve a blend of on-site and remote work, with specific details and flexible options available during the interview process. Employees at UHS enjoy access to various NHS discounts, a minimum of 35 days of paid leave (pro rata), and a comprehensive pension scheme.
Southampton is a desirable location for both living and working, situated on the southern coast, with an international airport and direct rail connections to major cities. The New Forest National Park and the stunning beaches of the Jurassic Coast are also nearby, offering a cost of living approximately 20% lower than London, along with numerous outstanding educational institutions.
At UHS, we are dedicated to the principle of 'Always Improving.' You will receive robust support to enhance your clinical skills, knowledge, and expertise, progressing from novice to expert in neonatal special care nursing. Our designated education team provides an induction program and supernumerary time. As part of the Thames Valley and Wessex Neonatal Network, we offer a foundation or Preceptorship program for staff new to the specialty, fostering a culture of quality improvement through feedback, audits, and research.
Key Responsibilities
In collaboration with the Senior Sister, you will supervise and guide the nursing staff on the Unit, taking on a leadership role to promote optimal patient care. You will work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team within the Neonatal Unit and ensure a collaborative approach to care.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Reporting and receiving updates on the care and conditions of the infants
- Ensuring that patients, families, and caregivers are at the center of all activities
- Coordinating discharge arrangements and ongoing care with community services
- Proactively educating and training junior staff on clinical practices, guidelines, and standards
- Managing complaints effectively and taking appropriate actions
- Handling adverse events and communicating with senior colleagues, ensuring transparency and learning from incidents
- Fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement
Additional Duties:
We prioritize effective communication with parents from the moment of admission, involving them in ward rounds and ensuring continuity of care. Nurses and Allied Health Professionals will conduct parent craft sessions in a supportive environment, empowering parents with empathy and understanding. We promote feeding progression in collaboration with the Infant Feeding Team and Speech and Language Therapy.
Parents will receive guidance to confidently care for their infants, facilitating safe and timely discharges. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality care.
Organizational Commitment
We are dedicated to fostering a culture of collaboration, kindness, and respect, with effective communication within the team. We value inclusivity and diversity, encouraging open dialogue through our Freedom to Speak Up champions.
We prioritize staff health and well-being, considering flexible working arrangements that balance service needs with the work-life balance of our colleagues.
