The Senior Consultant Nurse will lead the development of patient-centered, evidence-based practices while establishing and upholding professional benchmarks for patients requiring enteral and parenteral nutrition and those facing intestinal failure.

In this role, you will manage a clinical caseload of patients with complex needs, functioning as an autonomous practitioner who provides advanced clinical nursing expertise. The position entails a minimum of 60% clinical responsibilities and 40% dedicated to strategic service enhancement, education, and research.

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be a driven and skilled professional with advanced clinical expertise in intestinal failure, parenteral nutrition, and nutritional support, capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Offering expert guidance to patients referred for specialized care and support, serving as a primary contact for assessments, information, and advice for patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare staff.
  • Leading the adoption of evidence-based best practices within your clinical specialty, assessing and enhancing patient care, and developing clinical pathways to support these initiatives.
  • Collaborating strategically with local and national NHS entities, non-NHS organizations, local authorities, independent contractors, and the public to promote best practices in your area of expertise.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Adult/Child Nurse on the NMC Register.
  • Professional knowledge gained through a postgraduate degree, supplemented by specialized training and experience in clinical or human nutrition.
  • Completion of a Non-Medical Prescribing Course with current clinical experience in prescribing parenteral nutrition for patients with complex needs.
  • Evidence of ongoing personal learning and development.

Desirable

  • Doctorate in a relevant field.
  • Teaching or educational qualifications.
  • Leadership certification.

Experience

Essential

  • Advanced knowledge and substantial recent experience in the area of clinical expertise, demonstrating expert knowledge supported by theory and continuing professional development relevant to the specialty.
  • Extensive post-registration experience as a lead nurse/service manager at Band 8a or above in a defined or related specialty within a complex NHS or acute hospital setting.
  • Experience working autonomously at a specialist level as an expert nurse practitioner.
  • Proven experience in delivering change management initiatives.
  • Experience in clinical leadership and managing both services and personnel.
  • Experience collaborating across organizational boundaries to develop and provide services.
  • Evidence of significant contributions to clinical advancements within a service.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for developing and delivering educational programs and teaching/assessing multidisciplinary staff in clinical practice.
  • Evidence of applying research in practice.
  • Experience in research, audit, and clinical effectiveness.
  • Experience advocating for patient service users.
  • Experience in resource and budget management.
  • Experience leading the development and updating of organizational policies and procedures related to the specialty.
  • Awareness of current NHS policy context relevant to the specialty and the ability to translate this into local practice.
  • Understanding of safeguarding and mental capacity principles.
  • Knowledge of corporate and clinical governance processes and service requirements.
