Job Description

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Senior Data Protection Officer to join our team at the Department for Work and Pensions. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in ensuring the effective management and protection of personal data.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide Expertise and Guidance: Offer advice and guidance to the Department on its obligations under the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Monitor and Report: Independently monitor the Department's compliance with data protection obligations and raise issues, risks, and concerns to ensure timely resolution.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Act as the primary point of contact for customers and employees on data protection matters, providing clear and concise information to address their queries and concerns.
  • Freedom of Information: Provide advice on Freedom of Information requests and oversee the Department's overall FOI performance, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Lead a team of Information Rights specialists, providing guidance and support to ensure the effective delivery of data protection and FOI services.
  • Strategic Leadership: As part of the Security and Resilience SLT, provide leadership and support to the Directorate and SLT colleagues, ensuring integration between teams and driving continuous improvement.
Person Specification
  • Essential Criteria: Hold a recognized Data Protection qualification and have experience operating within a data protection profession in an organization processing significant amounts of personal data.
  • Leadership and Management: Proven track record of delivering timely quality outcomes, leading teams, and inspiring and motivating employees to achieve excellence.
  • Communication and Influencing: Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including senior leaders and the Information Commissioners Office.
  • Stakeholder Management: Confident in stakeholder management, with the ability to communicate complex issues in a clear and concise manner.
Desirable Criteria
  • Freedom of Information Qualification: Recognized Freedom of Information qualification.
  • Law Degree or Professional Legal Qualification: Law degree or professional legal qualification.
  • Postgraduate Qualification in Information Rights: Postgraduate qualification in Information Rights.
  • Leadership Experience: Experience of leading an FOI function.
  • Regulatory Awareness: Awareness of the legal and regulatory framework in which a large organization operates.
