About the Role

Newton Place Surgery is seeking a skilled Pharmacy Technician to join our team. As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting the prescription team to resolve day-to-day medicine issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical support to the prescription team to ensure safe and effective use of medicines.
  • Assist and advise clinicians on alternative medicines when notified items are unavailable.
  • Ensure MHRA alerts are acted upon and provide advice on medication changes.
  • Complete audits around patient safety and ensure dissemination of information to the wider clinical team.
  • Undertake patient-facing and patient-supporting roles to ensure effective medicines use through shared decision-making conversations with patients.
  • Conduct medicine optimization tasks, including effective medicine administration, support medication reviews, and medicines reconciliation.
  • Support medication reviews and medicines reconciliation for new care home patients and synchronize medicines for patient transfers between care settings.
  • Provide specialist expertise to address both public health and social care needs of patients, including lifestyle advice, service information, and help in tackling local health inequalities.
  • Provide training and support on the legal, safe, and secure handling of medicines, including the implementation of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS).
  • Promote Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) and online ordering, develop relationships with other pharmacy professionals and members of the multidisciplinary team to support integration across health and social care.
  • Create, review, and disseminate protocols when needed.
  • Manage shared care protocols and liaise with Clinical Pharmacists for more complex patients.
  • Support initiatives for antimicrobial stewardship to reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescribing.
  • Assist in the delivery of medicines optimization and management incentive schemes and patient safety audits.
  • Support the implementation of national prescribing policies and guidance within GP practices, care homes, and other primary care settings.
  • Attend a formal appraisal with your manager at least every 12 months.
  • Assist with the investigation of complaints when required.
  • Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk.
  • Contribute to public health campaigns through advice or direct care.
  • Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Working under appropriate clinical supervision to ensure safe, effective, and efficient use of medicines.
  • Experience working in a primary care setting.
  • Understanding and knowledge of healthcare provision in GP practices, QOF, and enhanced services.

Desirable

  • An appreciation of the new NHS landscape, including the relationships between individual practices, PCNs, and the commissioners.
  • Good clinical system IT knowledge of EMIS.
