We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Pharmacy Technician to join our team at Newton Place Surgery. As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and effective use of medicines for our patients.
Key Responsibilities- Provide support to the prescription team to resolve day-to-day medicine issues.
- Assist and advise clinicians on alternative medicines when notified items are unavailable.
- Ensure MHRA alerts are acted upon and provide advice on medication changes, ensuring dissemination of information to the wider clinical team.
- Complete audits around patient safety.
- Undertake patient-facing and patient-supporting roles to ensure effective medicines use through shared decision-making conversations with patients.
- Conduct medicine optimization tasks, including effective medicine administration, checking inhaler technique, support medication reviews, and medicines reconciliation.
- Support medication reviews and medicines reconciliation for new care home patients and synchronize medicines for patient transfers between care settings and linking with local community pharmacists.
- Provide specialist expertise to address both public health and social care needs of patients, including lifestyle advice, service information, and help in tackling local health inequalities.
- Provide training and support on the legal, safe, and secure handling of medicines, including the implementation of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS).
- Promote Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) and online ordering, develop relationships with other pharmacy professionals and members of the multidisciplinary team to support integration across health and social care.
- Create, review, and disseminate protocols when needed.
- Manage shared care protocols and liaise with Clinical Pharmacists for more complex patients. Support initiatives for antimicrobial stewardship to reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescribing.
- Assist in the delivery of medicines optimization and management incentive schemes and patient safety audits.
- Support the implementation of national prescribing policies and guidance within GP practices, care homes, and other primary care settings.
- Attend a formal appraisal with your manager at least every 12 months, with progress reviewed on a regular basis to agree new objectives.
- Assist with the investigation of complaints when required.
- Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk.
- Contribute to public health campaigns through advice or direct care.
- Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area.
Essential
- Working under appropriate clinical supervision to ensure safe, effective, and efficient use of medicines.
- Experience working in a primary care setting.
- Understanding and knowledge of healthcare provision in GP practices, QOF, and enhanced services.
Desirable
- An appreciation of the new NHS landscape, including relationships between individual practices, PCNs, and commissioners.
- Good clinical system IT knowledge of EMIS.
Skills

- Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information effectively with people at all levels by telephone, email, and face-to-face.
- Knowledge of IT systems, including the ability to use word processing skills, emails, and the internet to create simple plans and reports.
- Good personal organizational skills.

Qualifications
Essential
- Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
- Meets the specific qualification and training requirements as specified by the GPhC criteria to register as a Pharmacy Technician.
