Job Summary

We're seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Technician to join our team in Elmdon, Birmingham. As a key member of our laboratory team, you'll play a critical role in supporting our scientific investigations and ensuring the quality of our products.

Main Responsibilities

  • Support the Laboratory Manager in reporting on key measures and ensuring the smooth operation of the laboratory.
  • Perform laboratory tests to produce reliable and precise data, using a range of technical equipment including gloss meters, microscopes, and tensile machines.
  • Carry out routine tasks accurately and follow strict methodologies to analyze samples and specimens.
  • Prepare and dispose of chemicals and waste products safely, adhering to strict safety procedures and protocols.
  • Construct, maintain, and operate laboratory equipment, including traditional measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Perform measurements and laboratory testing using a variety of test equipment.
  • Analyze data and use statistical techniques to evaluate product quality and generate informative reports.
  • Use computers and perform mathematical calculations to prepare graphs and present results to senior colleagues.
  • Record and interpret results, preparing reports and presenting findings to the team.
  • Use problem-solving techniques to assist in internal and external quality concerns, working collaboratively with the team to resolve issues.
  • Support customer sites as required, ensuring that our products meet the highest standards of quality and safety.

Main Missions and Results

  • Assist in the control and maintenance of the laboratory facility and equipment, ensuring that all systems are functioning optimally.
  • Assist in the control and maintenance of laboratory records, ensuring that all data is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Perform quality control checks in line with specified schedules, identifying and addressing any issues promptly.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and organized laboratory environment, adhering to 5S principles and ensuring that all equipment is properly calibrated and maintained.

  • Ability to work independently, using initiative to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, communicating effectively with colleagues at all levels.
  • Ability to learn specific, practical techniques and apply this knowledge in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to use technical equipment accurately and safely, following strict protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to review data and generate informative reports, using statistical techniques to evaluate product quality.
  • Ability to make informed decisions based on data and risk evaluation, working collaboratively with the team to resolve issues.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, with a strong focus on quality and safety.
  • Ability to maintain and calibrate technical equipment, ensuring that all systems are functioning optimally.
  • PC literate, with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Good numeracy skills, with the ability to perform mathematical calculations and analyze data.
  • Previous experience of working in the automotive sector is desirable, as is experience of working in a laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of plastic injection moulding, slush moulding, paint, and assembly high-volume processes is desirable, as is working knowledge of problem-solving techniques and statistical analysis.
