Position Overview

This position is situated within the Public Access and Government Services Directorate, which operates at the core of The National Archives, offering specialized advice and support to governmental entities and public organizations to ensure adherence to the legal requirements outlined in the Public Records Act 1958 (PRA) and the Freedom of Information Act 2000. The role also focuses on enhancing the capabilities for the preservation and transfer of digital government records.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing guidance to public bodies regarding the closure or retention of records.
  • Manage applications for record closure or retention submitted to the Advisory Council on National Records and Archives.
  • Facilitate the advancement of closure and retention schedules and modify existing records through specialized databases.
  • Collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to address and resolve access-related challenges.
  • Oversee key communication channels, ensuring timely responses in line with service agreements.
  • Support the Access Team in data analysis, reporting, and maintaining essential record logs.
  • Engage in Access projects, including historical retentions and new year openings.

Work Environment

This is a full-time position, with opportunities for flexible working arrangements, including part-time schedules and job sharing, contingent upon the operational needs of the department. The role requires regular travel to the Kew site, with a minimum of 60% of work time expected on-site.

Essential Qualifications

  • Proven ability to meet strict deadlines while completing schedules.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and proofreading capabilities, ensuring high-quality outputs under tight timelines.
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills, exercising sound judgment and escalating issues as necessary.
  • Strong teamwork abilities and a flexible approach to collaborating with colleagues across The National Archives and other governmental departments.
  • High standard of written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Proficient in ICT skills, particularly with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.).

Desirable Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the Freedom of Information Act and related legislation.
  • Willingness to travel within the UK for visits to governmental bodies.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position is £27,000, with The National Archives contributing £7,290 towards membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
