Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated and results-driven Deputy Director to join the Strategy and Private Office (SPO) within the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).

The SPO is integral to DBT, playing a crucial role in shaping departmental priorities and executing significant initiatives for senior leadership and Ministers.

The teams within SPO tackle emerging and multifaceted challenges, ensuring that DBT adopts a comprehensive and analytical approach to strategic decision-making, particularly in the realm of economic policy and growth.

Our work is adaptable, allowing us to respond to the evolving priorities of Ministers and senior officials, while collaborating closely with external specialists and various teams across DBT and other governmental bodies.

This position emphasizes trade policy and its interconnections with other priorities and interests within DBT and the Government. Notable projects have included investigations into forced labor in supply chains, addressing market-distorting practices, exploring green subsidies, advancing trade digitalization, and analyzing the impact of trade performance on the UK’s economic growth.

The ideal candidate will lead a high-achieving team focused on delivering strategic projects across a diverse array of topics. They will be expected to think critically and engage effectively with stakeholders across DBT, including regular interactions with senior leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership to the team in executing policy and strategy initiatives that address key cross-cutting issues;
  • Foster and develop a high-performing team (comprising three Grade 7s and two SEOs) and contribute to the broader management of SPO;
  • Oversee the analysis of policies and the development of strategies for the team’s projects;
  • Establish credible and collaborative relationships with external experts and colleagues across Government;
  • Engage effectively with senior-level stakeholders across the department regarding the team’s initiatives;
  • Identify and cultivate a pipeline of future projects for the team by understanding ministerial priorities, collaborating with policy teams, pinpointing emerging issues, and securing consensus from senior stakeholders.

This role is expected to evolve in response to changing ministerial and senior official priorities, enabling SPO to adapt to the department's dynamic needs.

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with a strong ability to perceive the strategic landscape;
  • Proven track record in developing evidence-based policies and strategies;
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with the ability to navigate across boundaries and build relationships with teams within DBT and external partners;
  • Ability to engage credibly with senior stakeholders and comprehend their priorities;
  • Capacity to inspire and empower a team while ensuring the delivery of high-quality outcomes.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Familiarity with trade policy;
  • Understanding of economic policy-making.
