Position Overview

Role: Clinical Laboratory Technician

Location: University Hospital of North Midlands

Hours: Flexible working hours available.

The University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust is collaborating with various healthcare entities to enhance our Pathology services. We are looking for dedicated and proactive individuals to join our Biochemistry division.

Key Responsibilities

The role encompasses the following duties:

  • Receiving and accurately identifying biological specimens from patients, including blood and urine samples.
  • Utilizing barcode systems and entering sensitive data into the Pathology information management system to facilitate analysis and processing.
  • Communicating test results for Biochemistry and managing inquiries from medical staff and general practitioners.
  • Operating centrifuges to prepare blood samples for necessary investigations.
  • Distributing specimens to various Pathology departments and coordinating with external laboratories for specialized testing.
  • Conducting basic laboratory analyses and supporting departmental operations, including equipment maintenance and quality assurance.
  • A solid educational background, ideally to GCSE level or equivalent, is essential, along with experience in data entry and a keen attention to detail.
  • Previous laboratory experience is advantageous but not mandatory, as comprehensive training will be provided.

Essential Attributes

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Proficiency in using laboratory information management systems.
  • Ability to travel to different sites as required for the role.

Experience and Skills

Essential

  • Familiarity with IT systems.
  • Experience working collaboratively within a team and independently.

Desirable

  • Prior experience in a laboratory setting, particularly in sample reception.
  • Skills in mentoring and training others.

Education and Training

Essential

  • A good standard of education, evidenced by GCSE grades A-C in Maths, English, and a Science subject.
  • Relevant qualifications such as NVQ level 2 or equivalent.
  • Understanding of health and safety protocols in a laboratory environment.

Desirable

  • NVQ level 3 in Clinical Laboratory Support.
  • Competence in managing inventory levels.
