Edgware, Greater London, United Kingdom NHS Blood and Transplant Full time

Position Overview

Are you seeking a position where your efforts in media engagement can lead to tangible outcomes? While our media team may not be directly involved in frontline services, the initiatives we undertake significantly enhance and save lives. By advocating for blood, organ, stem cell, and tissue donation, you will play a crucial role in motivating individuals to take extraordinary actions that can save lives. If you possess the creativity and news acumen to inspire people to register as organ donors and engage in discussions about donation with their loved ones, we invite you to consider this opportunity. You will also have the chance to highlight groundbreaking scientific and medical advancements, making it essential that you are enthusiastic about exploring new medical fields and showcasing how our organization is committed to improving patient care. Although we are a large organization with approximately 6,000 staff members, if you thrive on the challenge of crafting and executing a coherent media strategy while effectively collaborating across various communication platforms, we encourage you to explore this role. NHS Blood and Transplant is dedicated to becoming the leading organization of its kind globally. We are in search of a Communications and Public Relations Lead who is passionate about making a difference, possesses a discerning eye for quality, and can provide expert guidance on reputational matters while managing complex media inquiries.

Key Responsibilities

In this position, you will oversee a media and public relations team tasked with delivering high-quality, evaluated communications aimed at recruiting new donors and showcasing the initiatives of NHS Blood and Transplant. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading media initiatives for NHS Blood and Transplant, which encompass proactive strategies for both national and local announcements, targeted outreach to ethnic minority media, consumer media engagement, and exploring new channels to reach a diverse audience, alongside reactive responsibilities such as handling inquiries, crafting rebuttals, and monitoring media coverage.
  • Collaborating with colleagues across the organization to gather stories and information, and working with various communication teams to implement cohesive and effective communication strategies.
  • Establishing influential relationships with key journalists while serving as a trusted advisor to the Senior Leadership Team, Executive, and Board regarding media management.
  • Ensuring NHS Blood and Transplant has the appropriate case studies, influencers, and systems in place to attract donors, particularly from ethnic minority backgrounds, utilizing audience insights to select impactful stories and channels. Assisting the Head of Media & PR in executing a media strategy that aligns with organizational objectives and key performance indicators.
  • Being prepared to travel and spend time away from your primary location, which may involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when necessary, with prior notice.

Our values are clearly defined and focus on providing exceptional care to our donors and their families. We prioritize mutual support and emphasize the importance of professional development to enable us to change lives, deliver quality assistance, and offer rewarding career opportunities. This is a chance to be part of a unique team within a service that saves lives every day of the year. We provide excellent benefits, including 27 days of annual leave (in addition to public holidays), a comprehensive induction and training program, and a competitive pension scheme. We are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace and aim to reflect the diverse communities we serve, actively encouraging applications from all sectors of the community.
