Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust for a Lead Financial Analyst eager to leverage their financial acumen to enhance the healthcare services we deliver.

As a vital member of the Management Accounts Team, you will offer a premier accounting and financial advisory service to a Care Group, which may encompass a considerable number of clinical services. This role is both rewarding and demanding, necessitating financial and analytical proficiency, complemented by outstanding communication and organizational capabilities.

The ideal candidates should be qualified Accountants (or in the process of qualification), with proven experience in a management accounting setting. Familiarity with the NHS framework would be advantageous.

Main Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering expert accounting knowledge and financial analysis to a Care Group and its associated operational teams.
  • Utilizing specialized knowledge of intricate NHS/Trust accounting systems, processes, regulations, financial methodologies, and pertinent legislation for individual service lines.
  • Providing a comprehensive and high-quality management accounting service to Operational Managers, Clinical Directors, Budget Holders, and Support Managers within their respective Service Lines and Care Groups/Operational Teams, ensuring alignment with patient care improvement and Trust financial goals.
  • Leading the management accounting reporting for the Care Group to the Care Group Finance Business Partner, ensuring timely completion of monthly reports and forecasts.
  • Applying best accounting practices to accurately represent the financial performance of Service Lines.
  • Employing persuasion, motivation, and negotiation skills to influence Service Line Management Team Budget Holders towards cost-effective decision-making.
  • Overseeing the budget-setting process for Service Lines, ensuring budgets reflect the necessary resources for service delivery.
  • Providing financial support for complex business cases, detailing the financial implications and investment appraisal techniques.
  • Utilizing Trust accounting software proficiently to ensure maximum information availability for Service Lines and the Trust.
  • Analyzing variances by comparing actual income and expenditure against budget and/or trend analysis techniques, highlighting areas of concern.
  • Benchmarking information internally or with other NHS organizations.
  • Offering specialized financial advice through the development of expert knowledge related to the supported service area, including contracts and pricing.
  • Ensuring service areas receive all due income through accurate recording, reporting, and reconciliation of activities performed/services delivered.
  • Compiling cost pressures and other service changes, ensuring cost allocations reflect the true costs of service delivery.
  • Collaborating with Finance Business Partners to understand the impact of activity changes on plans, expenditures, and forecasts.
  • Working with relevant Managers to generate precise financial forecasts for Service Lines, including activity levels, contract income, expenditures, and non-contract income.
  • Assisting Care Groups in identifying, implementing, and monitoring Financial Improvement Plans, which are crucial for the Trust's financial viability.
  • Leading training initiatives for Service Line Management Teams in all aspects of financial management, enhancing their financial capabilities through formal and informal training.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and expertise in financial management, accounting procedures, relevant legislation, and finance policies.
  • Recent Continuing Professional Development, including specialist training and demonstrable experience related to Finance and national accounting standards.
  • Awareness of current agendas, national directives, and all governance aspects.

Desirable

  • Demonstrable experience in Management Accounting.
  • Proven knowledge of the NHS finance regime, including tariff arrangements.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A levels and 5 x GCSE Grade C or above or equivalent, including Mathematics and English Language at GCSE level.
  • Either: a) Fully qualified Professional Accountant or studying towards qualification or b) Proven equivalent knowledge and demonstrable experience in a similar role.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development in line with relevant Institute requirements.
