Position Overview

Role: Welfare Rights Advisor for Housing Association Clients

Department: Advisory Services

Compensation: £28,226 - £29,913 per annum (pro rata: £21,712 - £23,010)

Work Schedule: 30 Hours Fixed Term

Work Environment: Primarily remote with required office attendance.

We are seeking a dedicated and well-organized Welfare Rights Advisor to join our accredited advisory team.

The Action Group collaborates with Almond Housing Association to deliver specialized Welfare Benefits Advisory services to its tenants. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting comprehensive benefit assessments
  • Assisting clients in submitting benefit applications
  • Educating clients about their entitlements and rights
  • Providing initial debt guidance
  • Identifying broader support needs and facilitating access to additional resources
  • Supporting clients in contesting decisions, including representation at appeal hearings
  • Coordinating with various partners and external organizations
  • Gathering data and preparing reports for funding bodies

The ideal candidate will possess a friendly demeanor and a positive attitude, with the ability to convey complex information in a clear and approachable manner.

Role Responsibilities

The Action Group partners with Almond Housing Association to offer expert Welfare Benefits Advisory services to tenants. Responsibilities include:

· Delivering comprehensive (Type III) Welfare Rights advice and representation to enhance tenant income.

· Assisting clients in understanding their entitlements and fulfilling their obligations.

· Providing initial debt advice and connecting clients with Money Advice services.

· Offering information, training, and support to other professionals, particularly Housing Officers.

The role requires flexibility, which may involve occasional evening or weekend work. The Action Group adheres to the Scottish National Standards for Information and Advice Providers, ensuring high-quality service delivery.

  1. Advice, Advocacy, and Representation
  • Provide guidance and support to clients, including disabled individuals, caregivers, and professionals.
  • Verify benefit eligibility and assist clients in pursuing claims and appeals.
  • Conduct 'Better Off' calculations to illustrate potential financial outcomes of employment.
  • Support clients with various advisory tasks, from application assistance to detailed casework and representation.
  • Develop strategies for complex cases.
  • Manage your own caseload and maintain accurate case records.
  • Collaborate with external agencies on behalf of clients.
  • Serve as a resource for professionals from diverse agencies to ensure widespread access to advice.
  • Identify additional issues affecting clients and refer them to appropriate services.
  • Stay informed about legislative changes.
  1. Coaching and Training
  • Mentor clients to enhance their understanding and confidence in navigating benefits.
  • Create tools and systems to help clients manage their benefit responsibilities.
  • Assist clients in liaising with agencies.
  • Develop and deliver presentations and training sessions on advisory topics to various audiences.
  1. Monitoring and Reporting
  • Maintain comprehensive records of client interactions.
  • Monitor and report on project activities.
  • Evaluate outcomes against project targets and adjust services as necessary.
  • Identify and report issues affecting clients.
  • Participate in progress meetings with project funders as required.
  1. Promoting the Service
  • Establish strong networking and collaborative relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Assist in creating written materials, articles, and promotional content.
  • Promote the service through various channels.
  1. Quality Service Contribution
  • Familiarize yourself with and adhere to all organizational policies and procedures.
  • Engage in necessary training opportunities.
  • Contribute to service user consultations and assist in developing service standards and evaluations.
  • Encourage understanding of the complaints process among service users.
  • Maintain awareness of equality and diversity issues and support marginalized groups.
