Job Description

The role of the Speech and Language Assistant is to provide support to individuals with communication needs, working closely with speech and language therapists and other healthcare professionals. The successful candidate will have a relevant qualification and experience of supporting clients or adults with SLCN, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide communication support to individuals with SLCN, using different communication methods and tools.
  • Work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating commitment to and ability to work as a team member.
  • Develop and deliver accessible information, using clear and concise language.
  • Support the development of communication skills in individuals, using evidence-based approaches.
Requirements
  • Relevant qualification at equivalent level of NVQ level 3.
  • Experience of supporting clients or adults with SLCN.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work flexibly and independently.
Desirable Criteria
  • Relevant working experience with individuals with mental health conditions.
  • Delivering training opportunities for staff.
  • Experience of working with speech and language therapists.
  • Advising other staff on communication approaches.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Evidence of relevant courses or personal development in the area of mental health and/or communication needs.
  • Knowledge of some relevant communication issues experienced by people with mental health conditions or Neurodevelopmental conditions.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Numerate.
  • Well organised.
  • Able to work in changeable, high-pressured environments.
