Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer Apprentice to join our team at People Source Consulting Ltd. As a Mechanical Design Engineer Apprentice, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and engineering support of mechanical life-saving survival equipment and other related products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Development: Ensure mechanical designs are fit for purpose and offer elegant, robust, and cost-effective solutions designed for manufacture.
  • Problem-Solving: Address and resolve mechanical design-related issues in manufacture (e.g., tolerancing, inadequate design) via the engineering change process in a timely fashion.
  • Project Management: Manage your mechanical engineering workload (including projects & work packages) to ensure they achieve design specification requirements and target prime costs, within agreed timescales and development costs.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Project/Product Manager to ensure projects are adequately supported from a technical aspect.
  • Reporting: Plan, monitor, and report on the status of any projects you are responsible for.
  • Documentation: Control the design status of projects and tasks by generating and maintaining relevant Project Files, Drawings, Documents, and Reports through the company's Documentation and Configuration Control procedures.
  • Support: Provide support and assistance to sales and marketing, manufacturing, and quality in areas where your knowledge and expertise are beneficial.
  • Research and Development: Assist the Chief Technology Officer in developing concepts, plans, specifications, and ideas for new products that may become approved projects for the engineering teams.
  • Communication: Liaise with internal and external Customers and Suppliers, including Marketing, Manufacturing, and Quality as necessary to fulfill the above tasks.
  • Compliance: Work in accordance with Company Procedures and the approved Quality System, ensuring safe working practices are adhered to in accordance with current Health & Safety legislation.
Requirements
  • Knowledge and Experience: Knowledge of plastics/sheet metal/castings type environment to IP68 and impact/crush testing.
  • Design Skills: Great functional mechanical solutions suited to life-saving applications in the marine environment.
  • Quality Management: Design life cycle (concept to production) within an ISO9001 or similar quality environment.
  • Market Knowledge: High & low volume design for Commercial and Leisure Markets.
  • Engineering Drawing: Engineering drawing change control and process.
  • Manufacturing: Design of production assembly and test fixtures.
  • Materials Science: Knowledge and experience of ultrasonic welding of plastic materials.
  • Industry Knowledge: Experience in marine, aviation nav/comms.
Skills and Competencies
  • CAD Skills: 3D/2D CAD (Solidworks).
  • Analysis: FEA/FEM/Stress Analysis.
  • Software: Experience of PDM/PLM software.
  • Office Suite: MS Word, Excel, MS Project, PPT, Publisher (Microsoft Office Suite).
