Key Responsibilities

- Collaborate as a vital member of the Spiritual Care Team, providing emotional and spiritual support to patients, families, and staff members.

- Contribute to the enhancement, administration, and delivery of the organization's spiritual care services, ensuring high standards of pastoral, spiritual, and religious support to patients and their families, as well as to staff.

- Address the spiritual, religious, and cultural needs of individuals in a respectful and sensitive manner.

- The Band 6 provider will typically serve as the 'duty spiritual care provider,' managing case loads, guiding volunteers and junior staff, and responding promptly to new referrals and unforeseen circumstances.

Job Responsibilities

On this occasion, we are looking for a compassionate spiritual care provider with Christian credentials.

This position was created following a colleague's departure for family commitments.

This part-time role, requiring two days a week, presents a fantastic opportunity to utilize and develop your skills in a dynamic and diverse manner.

We are a small team of paid spiritual care providers supported by many dedicated volunteers within this single-site healthcare facility. Your involvement will help us grow and enhance our diversity and impact, serving the entire hospital community.

If selected, you will work alongside another part-time Band 6 spiritual care provider, whose current schedule is Monday and Tuesday. While a new weekly pattern may be feasible, availability on Fridays is preferred.

The successful candidate will be expected to cover on-call nights at least once a week and should be able to conduct acts of Christian worship on occasional Sundays.

They must have the necessary authorization from their licensing faith body to perform these duties, including administering end-of-life rites.

Qualifications

Essential

  • The candidate must be an ordained/accredited Christian minister or religious sister/brother within Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI) and acceptable for appointment by the relevant Church body, recognized in their faith community.
  • The position is contingent upon the applicant being licensed for the role of Healthcare spiritual care provider by their licensing body, particularly for end-of-life prayers and delivery of Holy Communion (by extension, if necessary).
  • The candidate will possess recognized theological training to degree level or equivalent.
  • The candidate will have studied at university level in a field relevant to pastoral, spiritual, and religious care and healthcare spiritual care provision.
  • The candidate will be recognized or appropriately accredited and in good standing with their faith or belief community.

Desirable

  • The candidate will have Professional Registration with UKBHC.

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in spiritual and religious leadership (or equivalent community work), including care for the sick and dying.
  • Proven ability to work in demanding and sensitive situations with effective pastoral skills is essential for this role.
  • Experience as a spiritual care provider in a hospital or similar setting, such as a hospice, prison, school, or armed forces.
  • Experience visiting patients in a hospital in a pastoral capacity.
  • Experience working independently and flexibly.
  • Extensive experience in assessing and delivering pastoral, spiritual, and religious care.
  • Experience working in challenging environments, often in acute and end-of-life situations.
  • Experience supporting individuals through difficult and/or distressing circumstances.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Awareness of the need to maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
  • Strong knowledge of other world faith traditions.
  • A developed understanding of the mental health aspects of well-being.

Skills

Essential

  • Evidence of pastoral skills is required, with the ability to prepare and conduct services of Christian worship tailored to the needs of the congregation.
  • The candidate will possess excellent listening, empathy, and counseling-like skills.
  • A full driving license is required, and the candidate should typically be able to reach the hospital site within 40 minutes for on-call purposes.
  • The candidate must have excellent spoken and written English language skills.
