Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Haematology and Blood Sciences

Cambridge University Hospitals is seeking highly skilled and motivated individuals to join our Haematology (Blood Sciences) Department as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a leading healthcare provider, renowned for its clinical excellence and innovative research.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in Biomedical Science, with a relevant IBMS Specialist diploma or equivalent qualification. Experience working in a NHS diagnostic haematology laboratory would be desirable.

The laboratory has UKAS accreditation, and the department is an IBMS approved training laboratory. We are committed to supporting the professional development of our staff.

Main Duties:
  • Process specialist investigations in the department
  • Provide specialist advice to clinicians on test appropriateness and timescales
  • Provide specialist services, including training and problem-solving
  • Work independently and lead on specialist areas as directed by the Lead BMS
  • Act as a mentor for junior scientific and support staff
  • Work flexibly to meet service needs, including extended working days and participation in a 24/7 service
  • Supervise and train less experienced staff in own area of work
  • Follow Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Lead and supervise a section of the laboratory as required

The post holder must not work outside their defined field of competence.

Person Specification:
  • HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline or equivalent qualification
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
Experience:
  • Substantial practical experience of working in a Biomedical Science laboratory
  • Experience of Pathology IT systems
  • Experience of Quality Management Systems
  • Experience of training and supervision of staff
  • Previous relevant experience of working in a Haematology Laboratory
Knowledge:
  • Theoretical knowledge and practical experience of specialist biomedical procedures relevant to the post
  • Good knowledge of Blood Sciences, particularly Haematology
  • Knowledge of Risk Assessments
Skills:
  • Willingness to undertake cross-training to extend skill set
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrable interpersonal skills, able to work as part of a team or independently
  • Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods
  • High degree of manual dexterity to perform complex laboratory techniques
  • Ability to follow processes and procedures
  • Ability to supervise less experienced staff, including supporting the training of staff
  • Good influencing and negotiating skills
