Join Our Team as a Play Worker

Great Ormond Street Hospital is seeking a dedicated Play Worker to become an integral part of our enthusiastic Play Team. Embracing our collaborative spirit, you will work alongside other team members to provide essential support to children, young individuals, and their families during their time at the hospital.

Play is a vital component of our patients' well-being, and in this role, you will utilize your knowledge of play and child development to craft engaging play experiences that enhance the overall patient journey.

Your role as a Play Worker will significantly improve the hospital experience for children and young people, whether through bedside interactions or in designated play areas. By infusing creativity, passion, and commitment into your work, you will create meaningful play opportunities while offering essential support to families.

Within the Respiratory department, you will be pivotal in delivering high-quality, comprehensive play services to all children and families across the Trust, ensuring they feel safe and at ease in the hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and conduct play sessions for both individual children and groups
  • Establish a nurturing and secure play atmosphere
  • Encourage family involvement in play activities
  • Provide a variety of inclusive play options
  • Ensure toys are maintained in accordance with infection control standards
  • Collaborate effectively with the Play team and other healthcare professionals
  • Accurately document activity data
  • Refer children requiring specialized support to Play Specialist colleagues
Essential Qualifications
  • Diploma in Child Care/Play Work or a related discipline
  • Strong understanding of child development principles
  • Experience working with children and young people
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities
  • Commitment to maintaining professional boundaries
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Experience with Makaton or similar communication techniques
  • Understanding of the significance of play in healthcare environments
