About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Database Engineer to join our engineering team at Starling Bank. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for the application and infrastructure used to support our PostgreSQL databases.

Your primary focus will be on:

  • Collaborating with our DBA team to build and maintain our Database Manager application.
  • Delivering knowledge sharing across the team on Java and PostgreSQL.
  • Working closely with our teams to understand their database needs and make adjustments from an application and infrastructure standpoint.
  • Monitoring and optimizing the performance of our databases.
  • Analyzing queries to understand how our databases are being used.
  • Allocating for systems requirements and planning future needs.
  • Contributing to the management and maintenance of our Postgres database infrastructure.
Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Experience in software development, preferably with Java.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, preferably with Terraform.
  • Experience working in cloud environments, such as AWS or GCP.
  • A strong understanding of PostgreSQL from an administrative and developer perspective.
  • The ability to drive change, take initiative, and own your work.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the business.
Desirable:

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Knowledge of Docker or Kubernetes.
  • Experience working at a senior level and communicating effectively to achieve goals.
Interview Process:

Our interviewing process is a two-way conversation, where we want to get to know you as much as you get to know us. Our interviews are conversational and we encourage you to come prepared with questions and a curious mindset.

Our typical interview process includes:

  • First Interview - 30 minutes.
  • Technical Interview - 90 minutes.
  • Final Interview - 45 minutes.
