Job description

We are looking for an experienced Lead Infrastructure Engineer to join the Database Support team.

Working in an agile environment, this team supports Oracle and MongoDB database instances that underpin the core business functions of Companies House.

As part of your role, your responsibilities will include:


Defining, building, bringing into service, operating, supporting, continually improving new and existing database technologies, to serve a variety of user needs.

Managing database configuration, maintain system access and security, leading database upgrades and ensuring latest patches are applied.

Managing service availability, by proactively monitoring capacity along with performance tuning using Oracle OEM to identify issues before they occur.

Managing incidents, requests, changes and problems, providing resolutions including root cause analysis.
Maximise the use of tools and technologies and drive continuous improvement to deliver operational excellence.

Mentor and share knowledge of tools and techniques via Show and Tell sessions to improve the capability of the team.

Lead and coach senior infrastructure engineers on best practices and ensuring skill sets are kept up to date and innovate to trial new technologies.


You will be part of a small team consisting of 3 lead infrastructure engineers and 3 senior infrastructure engineers that provides 8:30am to 5pm cover.

The nature of this post will occasionally require you to do overtime during the week and at weekends.

There will also be a requirement to take part in an on-call rota providing cover to ensure the services remain operational 24/7/365 including Bank Holidays.

On-call will only be offered once the successful candidate has proven they can demonstrate the necessary skills and competence.

You will receive additional payment on top of your annual salary for on-call or overtime.

Experience

We're looking for a Database Administrator who thrives in a busy support role.


You will have extensive technical background and solid evidence of database technologies such as Oracle RDBMS, Oracle running on Amazon EC2, Oracle running on Amazon RDS and MongoDB.


You will be experienced in leading Oracle upgrades and patching on both RDS and EC2 instances as well as mongodb upgrades.

You'll use Agile methodologies and promote a culture of continuous improvement. You will be experienced in the release process and deployment cycles, having deployed releases from test through to live.


You will lead collaboration across diverse business areas with a range of people, focussing on continuous improvement whilst identifying best practices and sharing our experiences.

Successful candidates must pass a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check before they can be appointed.

BPSS is an entry level security check. It uses the Police National Computer (PNC) to make sure a candidate has no convictions. The check returns evidence of any current criminal record and un-spent convictions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

Successful candidates must meet the security requirements for Security Check (SC) before they can be appointed.


To gain SC clearance you will normally need to have been a UK resident for a minimum of 5 years and will need to successfully complete all stages of the vetting process.
