Job Purpose

To provide high-quality corpus and audio archival support and team leadership to the Digital Archive of Scottish Gaelic (DASG) and Corpas na Gàidhlig projects.

Main Responsibilities
  1. To supervise the work of corpus assistants working on the DASG project, and, where appropriate, to train new staff.
  2. To maintain accurate records of work in progress in line with project requirements and completed work, and to prepare regular reports.
  3. To use OCR software to capture texts digitally, proofread and edit OCRed texts, and save them as appropriately named files.
  4. To scan Gaelic texts using digital scanning equipment, file and correctly label scanned images and texts, and edit scanned images according to project protocols.
  5. To develop links with other corpus-related projects, and with libraries, archives, and electronic repositories as appropriate.
  6. To travel to and work in repositories as necessary, such as those related to Scottish Gaelic language and culture.
  7. To deal with copyright issues as appropriate.
  8. To liaise with IT and computing staff, and with commercial printers, as necessary.
  9. To assist the DASG systems developer with the DASG Audio Archive, maintaining the database of reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes, transcribing and/or overseeing the transcription of digitized recordings, aligning the transcriptions and recordings, and adding functionality to the web interface.
  10. To undertake training as required relating to corpus and archival duties.
  11. To undertake other duties relating to the DASG project as requested by the Director of DASG and the Project Manager.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and ExperienceEssential
  • A1 Honours degree in Scottish Gaelic or Celtic Studies with Gaelic.
  • A2 Detailed knowledge of Scottish Gaelic spelling conventions.
  • A3 Intimate knowledge of the DASG project.
Desirable
  • B1 Good knowledge of traditional Scottish Gaelic music.
  • B2 Good working knowledge of database administration tools (e.g. PHPMyAdmin).
  • B3 Good working knowledge of markup technologies, in particular VTT, HTML.
Skills
  • C1 Excellent communications skills, both orally and written, in both English and Scottish Gaelic.
  • C2 Good interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • C3 Time/project management skills and ability to work to deadlines.
  • C4 Ability to use initiative and independent judgment.
  • C5 Ability to work as part of a team.
  • C6 Excellent IT skills, including ability to use a text editor (e.g. Notepad++) to markup audio transcriptions.
  • C7 Ability to self-motivate and work with little supervision.
Experience
  • E1 Some relevant work experience with qualifications or more substantial work experience without relevant qualifications.
  • E2 Experience of scanning texts and working on Gaelic digital projects.
  • E3 Experience of cataloguing, transcribing, and annotating Gaelic audio recordings.
  • E4 Experience of working with online databases.
Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 5, £25,138 - £29,605 per annum. This post is full-time (35 hours per week), and has funding until 31 July 2025.
