Job Description

Role Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Character Artist to join our team at Sony PlayStation, working on a dark, story-driven 'Narrative Adventure' with genre-defining goals. Collaborating with the Character Art team, Art Director, and other members of the development team, the Senior Character Artist will build photorealistic, AAA-quality characters and creatures.

Our ideal candidate will demonstrate superb artistic ability and technical understanding of real-time character modeling and texturing within a game development team.

The role is based in a studio environment for 2-3 days per week with flexibility.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Produce AAA-quality character models that meet the design and direction, following existing pipelines.
  • Work closely with the Character Art and Concept teams and be receptive to feedback from the Art Director and Lead Character Artist.
  • Collaborate with Technical Art and Technical Animation to ensure all assets are efficient and fit for purpose.
Requirements:
  • Experienced Character Artist in games development.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates a high degree of artistic ability, particularly experience of making clothes, hair, and accessories.
  • Able to demonstrate a detailed understanding of human anatomy and proportion.
  • Expertise in sculpting, 3D modeling in Maya/Max, and PBR texturing of real-time characters in Substance Painter.
  • An enthusiastic and collaborative nature, self-motivated, positive, and open to feedback.
  • The capacity to address both creative and technical problems.
  • Proficient with industry-standard packages including but not limited to Maya, Substance Painter, ZBrush, and Marvelous Designer.
  • Solid understanding of character topology and the ability to make well-optimized and animation-friendly meshes.
  • Ability to work autonomously and to schedule, maintain good timekeeping, and self-organize.
  • A good communicator, able to understand technical instruction and share knowledge with the team.
Desirable Skills:
  • Experience with Unreal Engine.
  • Knowledge of AAA hair authoring workflows.
  • Shader knowledge is also a plus.
