Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Specialist Hand Therapist to join our dynamic team at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. As a clinical lead, you will be responsible for managing a clinical caseload of patients with traumatic and elective hand and upper limb injuries, as well as assessing and managing patients with non-surgical conditions referred from the community.

Main Responsibilities
  • Manage a clinical caseload of patients with complex hand and upper limb injuries, including those requiring surgical intervention.
  • Assess and manage patients with non-surgical conditions, including those referred from the community.
  • Supervise and manage junior hand therapy staff, including physiotherapy and occupational therapy students.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based practice guidelines and protocols for hand therapy services.
  • Contribute to the development of departmental objectives and strategies, aligned with the Trust's clinical governance framework and core values.

Person Specification
  • Essential:
    • Skilled in assessment and management of surgically and non-surgically managed hand therapy patients.
    • Skilled in the fabrication of splints for a broad range of conditions.
    • Skilled in exercise prescription for upper limb conditions.
  • Experience of supervising and managing junior hand therapy staff.
  • Experience of supervising hand therapy students.
  • Experience of working in a pressured environment with strict time management.
  • Involvement in research process in subject relevant to hand therapy.
  • Involvement in hand therapy service development.
  • Involvement in departmental audit (ideally hand therapy).
Desirable:
  • Attendance of management courses in a clinical setting.
  • Attendance of clinical educator courses.
  • Published research within hand therapy/upper limb field.
  • Led service development or audit within hand therapy/upper limb service.
Qualifications
  • Essential:
    • BSc Physiotherapy/BSc Occupational Therapy (or equivalent).
    • Post Registration Hand Therapy/Upper Limb MSK CPD.
    • HCPC Registration.
  • Desirable:
    • BAHT Membership.
    • MSc level study in relevant area.
    • Accredited Hand Therapist.
    • Post registration CPD in splinting or exercise prescription within hand/upper limb.
