Job Overview

The Chief of Professional Services plays a pivotal role akin to that of a Chief Operating Officer, tasked with shaping and executing the vision and strategic direction of the institution across all operational facets.

This position holds the responsibility for leading the professional support teams, ensuring exceptional service delivery that aligns with the academic mission and strategic goals of the institution.

Reporting directly to the Vice Principal/Head of Institution, this role encompasses comprehensive oversight of strategic planning, policy formulation, resource allocation, and infrastructure enhancement.

A significant area of focus is the strategic advancement and operational efficiency of the institution's facilities.

As a vital member of the leadership team, the Chief of Professional Services participates in the College Management Group (CMG) and represents the institution in key university committees, as well as advocating for institutional interests with external stakeholders.

This role includes direct management of the professional service departments within the institution and, through the department heads, oversees all professional services personnel who provide a comprehensive array of support for the academic operations across multiple schools.

Key Responsibilities 1.

Provide visionary leadership in the enhancement of professional support services, delivering high-quality, customer-centric, and efficient services that ensure the successful implementation of institutional and university strategic priorities and operational objectives, while driving service improvements and organizational change.

2.

Coordinate the formulation, execution, and delivery of strategic plans, ensuring that objectives are clearly defined, optimally aligned, and achieved in accordance with overarching university strategies and performance indicators, with regular assessments and adjustments as necessary.

3.

Offer strategic counsel and support to the Vice Principal/Head of Institution regarding leadership, management, and development initiatives, maximizing the institution's efficiency and contributions while anticipating future challenges and managing long-term plans.

4.

Contribute to and take accountability for the strategic evolution of institutional policies, procedures, and operational plans, ensuring alignment with university standards and compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements.

5.

Lead the strategic enhancement and operational efficiency of the institution's facilities.

6.

Manage institutional budgets and overall revenue in accordance with policies established with the Vice Principal/Head of Institution to achieve institutional strategies and objectives.

7.

Guide, develop, and manage a team of professional, technical, administrative, and support staff to ensure the delivery of professional support services across all academic and resource functions, optimizing institutional performance.

8.

Play a key role in institution-wide business process evaluations and the subsequent implementation of effective and cost-efficient action plans across all support activities, ensuring that university-wide support services are fit for purpose through effective communication and benchmarking with university services and other institutions.

9.

Oversee the implementation of the institution's internationalization strategy, ensuring that services and resources are aligned with institutional and university ambitions.

10.

Contribute to the organization and advancement of professional services across the university as a member of the Professional Services Group, chaired by the Chief Operating Officer and University Secretary.

11.

Implement agreed-upon university strategies, policies, and procedures by collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders across the university.

12.

Represent institutional interests in an ambassadorial capacity with various external agencies, establishing and nurturing relationships with professional organizations to realize university and institutional strategies.

13.

Lead and manage specific projects as assigned by the Head of Institution, including convening essential committees.

14.

Act as a deputy for the Vice Principal/Head of Institution when necessary.


Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required: A1 Degree/postgraduate qualification/professional qualification or equivalent, along with extensive relevant experience. A2 Comprehensive understanding of administrative and support systems, with significant experiential knowledge of change and project management methodologies. A3 In-depth knowledge of key funding agencies and potential industrial partners. A4 Familiarity with the specialized laboratory and equipment requirements for teaching and research. A5 Strong grasp of good governance principles. A6 Awareness of the primary challenges facing higher education and the institution. Preferred: B1 Knowledge of university funding and governance frameworks. B2 Experience in process design, systematic process improvement, and monitoring.

Terms and Conditions Salary will be competitive within the Management, Professional and Administrative, Senior Administrative Group, level 10.
