The Clinical Engineering department at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is dedicated to the comprehensive management of medical devices throughout the healthcare system and associated community facilities. The range of clinical equipment includes electrical, electronic, mechanical, software-based systems, and medical gas apparatus.

Key Responsibilities

The Medical Equipment Management Service (MEMS) is seeking a proactive Lead Medical Equipment Technician to play a pivotal role within our team. This position is both challenging and rewarding, requiring you to contribute significantly to our service goals in a fast-paced, technically demanding environment governed by an ISO9001 quality management system.

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to independently manage and prioritize daily tasks to ensure timely completion of repairs, scheduled maintenance, and related equipment management duties. You will also participate in the on-call service for blood gas analyzers. The maintenance responsibilities will be carried out both on-site and at various client locations across the region. A valid driving license and personal transportation are essential.

Candidates should hold a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in electronics or an equivalent qualification. Previous experience in servicing medical devices is preferred, and technical training will be provided.

A safety-oriented mindset and effective communication skills are crucial for this role. The ability to perform under pressure, adapt to changing circumstances, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously is required. Familiarity with equipment databases and relevant IT skills will be advantageous.

Job Responsibilities

Given the nature of this role and the challenges associated with ensuring access to medical equipment during standard hours, occasional work during off-peak hours may be necessary.

The successful candidate will:

  • Serve as a specialist engineer for various medical devices.
  • Effectively oversee assigned tasks, including managing junior staff involved in similar duties, ensuring that service objectives and targets are met.
  • Operate independently, managing and prioritizing personal and team workloads while exercising a significant degree of responsibility.
  • Organize, prioritize, and perform unsupervised maintenance and repairs on equipment in critical care and surgical settings while patients are present.
  • Collaborate with the section lead and senior clinical technologists to develop and maintain planned maintenance schedules for all medical devices.
  • Conduct acceptance testing and commissioning of new equipment, as well as preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection, calibration, and repair of a wide array of medical devices.
  • Communicate effectively with clinical users to schedule servicing or to gain a clear understanding of equipment issues. Assess the urgency of reported problems and respond accordingly.
  • Perform fault diagnosis using appropriate techniques to identify issues stemming from user error, equipment malfunction, or environmental factors (e.g., temperature, RF interference).

Qualifications and Experience

Required:

  • HNC in electronics or an equivalent qualification.

Preferred:

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
  • Technical registration with a recognized engineering institute.

Experience

Required:

  • Knowledge and experience in servicing, repairing, and calibrating medical devices.
  • Specialized training in the maintenance and repair of various medical equipment.
  • Proficiency in information technology.

Preferred:

  • Extensive experience in servicing, repairing, and calibrating medical devices.
  • Significant experience with quality management systems such as ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 13485:2012.

Physical Requirements

Required:

  • Ability to lift heavy equipment.
  • Capability to perform repetitive testing on equipment.
  • Willingness to work in confined or awkward positions.
  • Ability to walk long distances.
  • Proficiency in using precision tools with a high degree of dexterity.

Additional Requirements

Required:

  • Valid full driving license.

  • Ability to supervise maintenance assistants and trainees, ensuring quality work.
