The Mental Health Assessment and Intervention Service (MAIS) is a vital component of the Community Mental Health Services pathway. As a practitioner-led service, MAIS offers consultation and support from psychologists and psychiatrists. The team collaborates closely with primary and secondary care, as well as third sector agencies, to provide comprehensive care. The service contributes to the bio-psycho-social assessment process for new referrals, determining eligibility for secondary mental health care services. The team provides consultation and advice to referrers and other agencies regarding alternative services when the patient does not require the support of the CMHS pathway.
The team delivers short-term, evidence-based recovery-focused interventions on an individual and/or group basis for people experiencing mental health disorders. These interventions are tailored to meet the needs of individuals who cannot be supported within universal services and do not require a full multi-disciplinary approach to their management. The team works with a defined group of patients, assessing their needs, planning, implementing, and evaluating care, managing risk, and addressing safeguarding issues.
The team supports the Primary Care and CMHS Team Leaders in establishing robust working practices within Primary Care settings, third sector agencies, and other Livewell Services.
Clinical:The post holder will work in conjunction with other staff from MAIS to provide initial assessments and support calls within GP surgeries. This will determine eligibility for secondary mental health care services and/or intervention. The post holder will deliver evidence-based recovery-focused interventions for patients on an individual or group basis, in conjunction with partner agencies. They will provide psychoeducational packages and training related to the management of common mental health disorders to support third sector agencies in assisting people with common mental health problems.
The post holder will provide consultation to primary care and third sector agencies to ensure that those who require mental health support are identified and referred to the appropriate services in a timely manner. The post holder will work closely within Plymouth Primary Care Networks (PCNs) and GP surgeries to provide assessment, support, and guidance for those who present frequently or with complex problems but do not meet the criteria for secondary mental health care. They will be involved in the triaging of mental health work in GP surgeries and educating primary care staff on the role of MAIS.
Professional Development and Education:The post holder will be required to keep up to date with Mandatory training and developments in mental health care. They will participate in the provision of relevant community placements and training programmes for Mental Health professionals. The post holder will ensure they receive appropriate regular line management and clinical supervision in line with current policies of Livewell Southwest and participate in an annual appraisal. The role may involve travel across the city throughout the day and may involve carrying equipment from one area to another to support the delivery of training. Lone working will be involved in a variety of settings, including patient homes and community settings.
