Role Overview

We are seeking an Optical Materials Scientist to join our team at QinetiQ, where you will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts.

As an Optical Materials Scientist, you will be responsible for designing and developing novel electro-optic technologies, informed by hands-on materials research and experimentation. You will contribute to the development of advanced optical materials, which will lead to better surveillance systems and sensors that help protect people and infrastructure.

Your responsibilities will include:
  1. Contributing to and leading technical tasks relating to materials, devices, and measurements.
  2. Conducting materials prototyping by designing, modelling, synthesising, formulating, applying, and characterising novel materials and coatings.
  3. Preparing, designing, and participating in laboratory experiments and outdoor trials.
  4. Providing advice and consultancy for internal and external programmes and bids.
  5. Managing your own time and technical progress to meet agreed goals and deadlines.
  6. Maintaining detailed technical reports and logs.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:
  1. A good understanding of interactions between materials and electromagnetic radiation.
  2. Proficiency in using spectrometers and other laboratory test equipment, including spectrometers, imagers, and thermal analysis.
  3. Experience in formulating coatings, inks, and dyes.
  4. Knowledge of scientific programming languages, such as Matlab.
