The Role

As an Optical Materials Scientist at QinetiQ, you will be part of a dynamic team in a multidisciplinary research environment, contributing to the development of advanced optical materials and technologies. Your expertise will be essential in designing and developing novel electro-optic technologies, informed by hands-on materials research and experimentation.

Day-to-day, you will support QinetiQ's mission to enhance safety and security by contributing to the development of advanced optical materials, which will lead to better surveillance systems and sensors that help protect people and infrastructure.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to and leading technical tasks relating to materials, devices, and measurements
  • Conducting materials prototyping by designing, modelling, synthesising, formulating, applying, and characterising novel materials and coatings
  • Preparing, designing, and participating in laboratory experiments and outdoor trials
  • Providing advice and consultancy for internal and external programmes and bids
  • Managing your own time and technical progress to meet agreed goals and deadlines
  • Maintaining detailed technical reports and logs

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Farnborough site. Hybrid working patterns are available.

Essential experience includes a good understanding of interactions between materials and electromagnetic radiation, proficiency in using spectrometers and other laboratory test equipment, experience in formulating coatings, inks, and dyes, and knowledge of scientific programming languages such as Matlab.

Essential qualifications include a degree qualification in Chemistry or Materials Science (MSci, MChem, or PhD is beneficial).
