Job Overview
This position presents a unique and stimulating opportunity to contribute to the radiotherapy and proton beam therapy review team at University College London Hospitals. The individual in this role will rotate between the photon and proton departments, taking a leadership position within the Radiotherapy Review Team. This involves assessing patients throughout their treatment journey and providing both physical and emotional support during their radiotherapy experience.
The role is essential in guiding patients through the treatment process, clarifying potential side effects and toxicity associated with radiotherapy, and offering advice on effective self-care and symptom management. Comprehensive training will be provided for any necessary proton or photon beam therapy knowledge, including managing treatment side effects and independent prescribing if required.
The photon department is equipped with advanced Varian TrueBeam systems, featuring state-of-the-art imaging technology and 6DoF couches. Additionally, the department includes a fully equipped brachytherapy suite and a Gulmay skin unit. UCLH is recognized as one of the few NHS facilities providing proton beam therapy.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Review Radiographers, Radiotherapy Sisters, and Staff Nurses, taking a leadership role within the review team.
- Assess patients during their photon or proton treatment, offering physical and psychological support throughout their care.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive plan for on-treatment reviews, ensuring effective communication regarding any adverse effects.
- Lead service evaluations, audits, and quality improvement projects within the Review Team framework.
- Facilitate the training, development, and performance appraisal of Review Team members.
- Educate patients about the treatment process, potential side effects, and toxicity of radiotherapy, encouraging them to report any side effects and manage their symptoms effectively.
- Ensure timely and appropriate management of patients' side effects.
- Provide verbal and written information as necessary.
- Create an environment where patients feel comfortable discussing their concerns and feel supported during their treatment.
- Refer patients to other healthcare professionals, such as dieticians and counselors, as needed.
- Coordinate follow-up arrangements and ensure continuity of care is communicated to patients and relevant healthcare professionals.
