Lead Neonatology Physician

Manchester, United Kingdom Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

This role is situated within a premier Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and is designed for a duration of six months. The NICU serves as a critical referral hub for high-risk obstetric and neonatal care, managing a significant volume of complex cases annually. Our facility is equipped with 69 cots and handles over 1000 admissions each year, catering to a diverse range of medical and surgical neonatal conditions.

This position is particularly advantageous for medical professionals in training, fellows, and those who have recently completed their specialty training, who are eager to advance their careers in tertiary Neonatal Medicine. The role offers unparalleled exposure and skill development essential for building confidence and supporting applications for specialist registration. Opportunities to focus on specific subspecialties may also be available due to our collaboration with a leading children's hospital.

The position guarantees comprehensive training in Neonatology, supported by state-of-the-art facilities and information technology. It also provides avenues for research involvement, skill enhancement in management and governance, and fosters a collaborative environment with highly skilled neonatal nurses and allied health professionals.

Candidates must possess a minimum of six months' experience in a tertiary Neonatology setting within the UK or Ireland. Holding a full MRCPCH or an equivalent qualification is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities include delivering clinical services in Neonatal Medicine and Surgery, providing support for labor and postnatal wards, and collaborating closely with consultants and other medical staff. Active participation in the NICU education program and mentorship of junior medical staff and nurse practitioners is also expected.

Specific Duties in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit include:

  • Gaining expertise in the resuscitation and management of critically ill, extremely preterm, and specialized medical and surgical infants within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Overseeing the care of infants requiring intensive, high dependency, and special care.
  • Engaging in follow-up care for Neonatal outpatients.
  • Attending deliveries and providing support in postnatal wards as required.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings for antenatal counseling and planning.
  • Contributing to the training and education of junior doctors, nurse practitioners, and nursing staff.
  • Involvement in risk management, guideline development, research, and audit activities.
