About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Curatorial Assistant to join our team at the Royal Air Force Museum. As a key member of our Archives and Library team, you will play a vital role in supporting the development and preservation of our collections.

Key Responsibilities
  • Access and Research
    • Provide access to our collections and information to Museum colleagues, researchers, and external enquirers, adhering to Department policies and procedures.
    • Respond to requests for information in a timely and professional manner.
    • Supervise and assist researchers using our reading room, ensuring a positive and productive experience.
    • Disseminate knowledge through the delivery of agreed outputs, including outreach activities, exhibitions, and digital content.
    • Develop and maintain your knowledge of RAF history, including the collections held by the Department.
    • Contribute to our Research Programme by undertaking research and delivering agreed outputs, such as talks and blogs.
  • Stewardship
    • Assist in caring for our Archive and Library collections, adhering to Museum policies and procedures, as well as sector best practice guidelines.
    • Support the development of our collections through acquisition and disposal of material, and liaison with stakeholders.
    • Document and catalogue collections to enhance access and research use, in line with Museum policies and procedures, and Spectrum standards.
    • Contribute to our digitisation programmes, undertaking digitisation of documents, recording metadata, and uploading to our databases.
  • Administration and Departmental Support
    • Supervise volunteers as required.
    • Collect data and provide reports, both in writing and through presentations and discussion, as required.
    • Contribute actively to business risk management and Health and Safety management.
    • Support cross-departmental teams as required.
Requirements
  • A high level of knowledge related to Museum practice and administration, gained through employment or a relevant qualification.
  • Experience of using Collections Management systems, including Collections Management databases.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with archive and library collections.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office software skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of working within a team.
