About the Role

Our Commercial SME Underwriter is a key member of the Superscript team, responsible for evaluating, analyzing, and approving insurance applications for Small to Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). This role involves assessing the risk associated with underwriting policies, ensuring that they meet Superscript's risk appetite, and maintaining profitability while delivering exceptional customer service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and analyze insurance applications from SMEs to determine the risk level and appropriate premium pricing, including reviewing financial statements, industry classifications, loss history, and other relevant data.
  • Underwrite new and renewal SME commercial insurance policies in line with company guidelines, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal standards.
  • Approve or decline insurance applications based on risk assessment, underwriting guidelines, and company policy.
  • Monitor and manage the performance of the SME insurance portfolio to ensure profitability and growth.
  • Adjust underwriting strategies based on market trends, loss ratios, and emerging risks.
  • Collaborate with the product team to create or modify insurance products tailored to the SME market.
  • Work closely with other underwriters, claims adjusters, and the sales team to ensure a seamless underwriting process and to share knowledge and best practices.
Requirements
  • 3-5 years of experience in commercial underwriting, preferably within the UK SME market.
  • Experience with various lines of business, including commercial combined, property & liability.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills, with the ability to assess risk and make informed decisions.
  • Proficiency in underwriting software and tools.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly in documentation and data analysis.
