Chairperson of Environmental Standards Scotland

City of Edinburgh, United Kingdom ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS SCOTLAND Full time

Environmental Standards Scotland (ESS) is in search of a new Chairperson to guide and support the Board and staff in realizing its mission of ensuring Scotland enjoys a high-quality environment safeguarded through robust environmental legislation.

A vital aspect of this position involves cultivating relationships with key stakeholders, including the Scottish Parliament and Scottish Ministers. As an independent entity, the Chair must effectively convey the impartial perspectives of ESS as a regulatory authority.

This role emphasizes the ongoing evolution of the organization by developing and articulating ESS's strategic vision. This includes crafting the second strategic plan for ESS, which will be presented for Parliamentary review. This initiative may encompass the exploration of additional powers, enhancing ESS's stature and aspirations both domestically and globally.

The Chair will ensure that ESS maintains exemplary policies and practices that reflect high standards of corporate governance. This includes a thorough understanding of risk management and the effective utilization of its independent audit committee. Additionally, the Chair will oversee Board succession planning, ensuring that ESS possesses the necessary skills, experience, knowledge, and diversity to operate effectively. These goals will be pursued while maintaining a clear distinction between the Chair's responsibilities and the Chief Executive's operational duties. An annual evaluation of the Chief Executive's performance will be part of this collaborative process.

The Board holds corporate accountability for ensuring that ESS's actions and decisions align with its statutory responsibilities and the framework established in relevant legislation. Furthermore, the Board advocates for the efficient and effective utilization of resources in accordance with the principles of Best Value.
