We are currently seeking a permanent Assistant Ward Manager for a key role on Hillyers Ward (Band 6)
About Hillyers Ward
- High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) Treatment Centre : One of six specialized centers in the UK, our state-of-the-art HCID unit delivers expert care to patients with high consequence infectious diseases.
- Specialist Infectious Diseases Unit : Comprising 17 inpatient beds dedicated to HIV and TB care, with 15 en-suite single laminar flow rooms.
- Comprehensive Care : We also provide services in Dermatology, Renal, Lupus, and General Medicine, addressing a wide range of patient needs.
The diverse nature of care offered is fulfilling, presenting the opportunity to meet the varied requirements of our patient population.
As a successful candidate, you will demonstrate exceptional standards of care, serve as a positive role model, and possess experience in an Acute Medical setting. Candidates must have completed SSSAP, mentorship, or an equivalent program.

Key Responsibilities
The role of the Assistant Ward Manager is crucial in ensuring stable and effective leadership within Acute and General Medicine.
- Provide clinical and managerial leadership, demonstrating clinical expertise and a commitment to high standards of patient care.
- Manage people effectively, including training and education, while ensuring compliance and governance within the team.
- Oversee the daily operations of the clinical area, delegating tasks appropriately while maintaining overall accountability.
- Responsible for assessing and ordering temporary staffing as needed, acting as an authorized signatory.
- Participate in the development and implementation of clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Act as a deputy in the absence of the Ward Manager, attending departmental meetings and ward rounds.
- Engage in the development of care pathways to ensure consistent care delivery.
- Apply clinical governance strategies within the clinical area.
- Address complaints with professionalism, ensuring efficient and satisfactory resolutions.
- Support the implementation of local initiatives and manage local projects as required.
- Ensure effective resource management, including stock control and budget adherence.
Candidate Profile
Experience
- Proven experience in ward management, including rota management and resource allocation.
- Experience in teaching, assessing, and supervising in a clinical environment.
Skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage time effectively.
- Up-to-date knowledge of clinical and professional issues.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of handling sensitive situations with care.
Knowledge
- Relevant health-related degree or equivalent qualification.
- Post-registration course pertinent to the specialty.
