London, Greater London, United Kingdom Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Job Overview

This position is open to all candidates holding a valid Nursing and Midwifery Council Personal Identification Number (PIN), which is essential for practicing as a registered nurse in the UK.

If you possess only a Personal Reference Number (PRN), we kindly ask you not to submit an application for this role.

We invite you to explore opportunities with Capital Nurse or Capital Midwife for international nursing or midwifery positions.

Join Our Inclusive Nursing Team

Become part of our dynamic team and enhance your expertise in managing advanced critical care therapies for adults facing severe health challenges.

Our Critical Care services encompass three distinct and engaging areas: the Adult Intensive Care Unit, Elizabeth High Dependency Unit, and the Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit.

Ideal candidates will have postgraduate experience in recovery or critical care nursing. While experience in cardiac nursing is advantageous, it is not mandatory. We require all applicants to have experience in an acute surgical environment. Tailored induction and training will be provided to support candidates with limited experience in caring for sedated and mechanically ventilated patients.

Main Responsibilities

This role involves working within the Critical Care unit, rotating through the Adult Intensive Care Unit, Elizabeth High Dependency Unit, and Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit.

The successful candidate will collaborate with the ward manager and multidisciplinary team members to uphold high standards of nursing care and contribute to staff development as part of the ward team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the professional development and performance of student nurses and unqualified staff within Critical Care.
  • Providing comprehensive care under the guidance of experienced staff.
  • Demonstrating flexibility in clinical duties and providing coverage as needed.

About Our Units

Adult Intensive Care Unit

The AICU offers a unique opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in intensive care nursing at a leading cardiorespiratory unit.

As a designated Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) center, we provide care for patients experiencing severe acute respiratory and cardiac failure, as well as those with complex cardiac conditions and lung diseases.

Elizabeth High Dependency Unit

This unit features 18 beds and specializes in adult congenital heart disease and lung conditions, including Interstitial Lung Disease and Cystic Fibrosis.

Staff Nurses in the HDU will work in state-of-the-art facilities, providing post-surgical care and utilizing advanced monitoring and support devices.

Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU)

PACU at our facility is a 10-bedded unit that cares for patients of all ages following cardiac and thoracic surgeries, as well as invasive cardiology procedures.

Key Duties

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining nursing documentation to the Trust's standards.
  • Participating in nursing audits under supervision.
  • Contributing to goal-setting and benchmarking standards of care.
  • Fostering a collaborative environment to deliver exceptional nursing care.
  • Adhering to Trust policies and clinical governance frameworks.
  • Ensuring a safe environment for the well-being of patients and staff.
  • Managing clinical needs of defined patient groups while prioritizing care.
  • Promoting healthy lifestyles in line with national strategies.

Communication and Teamwork

Demonstrating professionalism and courtesy in interactions with patients, visitors, and colleagues is essential. You will contribute to sharing best practices within the team and uphold a positive image of the Trust.

Professional Development

Engagement in annual appraisals and personal development plans is expected, alongside participation in clinical supervision and ongoing training.

Resource Management

Collaboration with the ward team to ensure effective resource utilization is crucial, as is participation in self-rostering initiatives.

Service Development

Contributing to a positive learning environment and participating in staff education and development is key to this role.

Policy Development

In collaboration with the ward manager, you will engage in local policy development and implementation of Trust policies at the ward level.
