Role Overview

The Employment Counsel position is situated within the Vodafone UK multi-disciplinary Legal Risk Management Team. This role offers practical, proactive, and solution-oriented employment law guidance, aligned with Vodafone's core values, on a variety of issues, particularly focusing on: (i) TUPE guidance for bids and procurement, (ii) ACAS and Employment Tribunal Claim management, and (iii) intricate employee relations and HR initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Delivering practical, succinct, and commercially viable employment law counsel to various sectors of the UK business, including:

- Advising on all facets of TUPE, primarily concerning service provision changes in a dynamic environment;
- Managing ACAS and Employment Tribunal Claims, including the engagement of external legal counsel;
- Providing guidance, support, and training to HR on all employment law matters, including complex employee relations issues, internal policies, contracts, and handbooks.

2. Capable of independently managing employment law advice and projects, prioritizing effectively, and delivering timely counsel with appropriate oversight.

3. Producing clear, concise internal briefing documents and advice, with the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including senior management.

4. Independently overseeing all employment law advice and projects, updating precedents, and conducting transformation initiatives, including the creation of guidance materials and training for stakeholders and legal colleagues.

5. Engaging and managing external legal counsel as necessary.

6. Collaborating efficiently with other members of the UK Legal Team.

7. Providing support to the Senior Employment Counsel during periods of absence and recognizing the developmental benefits of challenging opportunities.

8. Assisting the Senior Employment Counsel in supervising junior team members, including trainees and paralegals.

Candidate Profile
  • Proficient knowledge and experience in Employment Law, particularly in advising on TUPE matters related to service provision changes for tenders and procurement.
  • Exceptional communication skills, capable of delivering clear and concise advice and training tailored to the audience.
  • Strong drafting abilities, with experience in creating TUPE schedules, contractual documents, and correspondence.
  • Effective negotiation and influencing skills, with the capability to lead legal negotiations at the appropriate level.
  • Able to establish and maintain a robust network of contacts across the organization.
  • Willingness to mentor and support junior team members.
  • Qualified legal professional (Solicitor, Barrister, Chartered Legal Executive, or equivalent) with a minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience in either private practice or an in-house setting. Any reference to PQE is a guideline, and all applicants demonstrating the required skill set will be considered.
  • In-depth understanding of Employment Law and a clear grasp of the commercial and legal risks, with a proven ability to adopt a proactive and solution-oriented approach.
  • Capable of working independently and demonstrating sound commercial judgment in managing routine risks.
