Position Overview:
A vacancy exists at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust for a locum consultant physician specializing in Respiratory Medicine, particularly with a focus on Pleural and Lung Cancer.

Role Responsibilities:
We invite applications for this locum consultant position aimed at enhancing our respiratory services. The Respiratory Medicine department at Glenfield Hospital is renowned for its academic and clinical excellence.

Clinical Services:
Our team provides specialized care in various areas, including:
  • Lung cancer treatment with advanced bronchoscopic and pleural techniques
  • Management of chronic suppurative lung infections
  • Cystic Fibrosis care
  • Tuberculosis treatment
  • Domiciliary ventilation services
  • Airways disease management
  • Interstitial lung disease care
  • Exercise and sports medicine

The Leicester cardio-respiratory emergency streaming pathway has been operational since 2013, allowing efficient patient assessment by our dedicated cardio-respiratory teams.

Patient Care:
All patients are evaluated in the Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) and Coronary Care Units (CCU) following referrals from various sources. Our CDU is the largest cardio-respiratory receiving unit in the UK, managing over 50 patients daily, with a significant percentage coming directly from primary care.

Ward Management:
We oversee five specialized respiratory wards, totaling 129 beds, each focusing on distinct themes such as:
  • Short stay unit
  • Non-invasive ventilation
  • Cystic fibrosis and chronic lung disease
  • Tuberculosis and higher dependency
  • Pleural disease and cancer

Academic Collaboration:
We maintain strong partnerships with the Universities of Leicester and Loughborough, hosting the NIHR Leicester Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit and the East Midlands Breathomics Pathology Node (EMBER). Our department is integral to the Leicester Cancer Research UK Thoracic Oncology Centre.
