Job Summary

The Outdoor Recreation Instructor will be responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering outdoor recreational activities for students within the Utah State University Eastern Campus Life Department. This role includes grading, engaging with students, and ensuring they understand course expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead outdoor recreational activities, including fly fishing trips, to promote physical fitness, wellness, and a positive lifestyle.
  • Conduct initial classes to review trip details, discuss safety and equipment, and ensure student understanding.
  • Ensure student safety and foster a positive and educational environment during activities.
  • Collaborate with the Campus Life Department to enhance the outdoor program course.
  • Follow university policies and procedures for taking students on trips and engaging with students.
  • Provide thorough safety instructions and emergency procedures before activities.
  • Ensure all equipment is properly maintained, safe, and ready for use.
  • Monitor student activities to ensure safety and compliance with rules.
  • Assess students' skills, participation, and knowledge throughout the course and provide constructive feedback.
  • Encourage a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students.
  • Keep detailed records of activities and student participation.
  • Stay updated with current trends and practices in outdoor education and recreation.

Qualifications

  • At least 1-2 years of experience in related outdoor activities.
  • Knowledge of and experience in planning and organizing trips and events.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of outdoor activity related to the course.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety protocols, first aid, and emergency response strategies.
  • Familiarity with instructional methods and teaching strategies suitable for outdoor education.
  • Awareness of university policies and procedures related to student activities and trips.
  • Knowledge of environmental stewardship and Leave No Trace principles.
  • Understanding of how to properly use and maintain outdoor recreational equipment.
  • Ability to lead and motivate students in outdoor settings.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for delivering instructions, safety briefings, and feedback.
  • Excellent organizational skills to plan, coordinate, and execute activities.
  • Effective problem-solving skills to handle unexpected situations and emergencies.
  • Proficiency in teaching and engaging students in a hands-on learning environment.
  • Ability to participate in and lead physically demanding outdoor activities.
  • Flexibility to adapt plans based on weather conditions, student needs, or other variables.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in high-stress or emergency situations.
  • Keen attention to detail in planning activities, ensuring safety, and maintaining equipment.
  • Competence in using relevant technology and software for scheduling, communication, and documentation.
