Role Responsibilities

We invite you to join our team as a Field Data Collector for the Office for National Statistics. In this capacity, you will conduct official surveys that will assist in informing the Government about the nation's status.

Your responsibilities will include visiting selected addresses to gather household contact information and encouraging participation in surveys, either online or via telephone, as well as conducting interviews with respondents in their residences.

This position allows for home-based work within a 40-mile radius of your designated location. You will be expected to manage your workload effectively to ensure travel and task completion within your contracted hours. Consideration of your home location in relation to your chosen area is essential, as failure to meet this requirement may result in the withdrawal of your offer.

This role offers flexible working hours designed to accommodate both your needs and those of the organization. You will be employed on an annualized contract of 1144 hours, which is roughly equivalent to 22 hours per week.

To ensure comprehensive outreach, interviews will be conducted between 09:00 and 20:00, with potential administrative and travel tasks outside these hours. Interviewers are expected to work during mornings, afternoons, and evenings, with a commitment to working on Saturdays when necessary.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for individuals who possess a friendly and approachable demeanor, along with the confidence to engage with a diverse range of people, whether through phone or face-to-face interactions. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will represent ONS and may need to encourage participation from hesitant members of the public.

You will also be responsible for planning, organizing, and managing your own workload, with comprehensive training and support provided to assist you in this endeavor.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to transport and carry equipment such as a laptop and survey materials, and navigate between addresses.
  • Work within approximately 40 miles of the advertised location.
  • Conduct interviews between 09:00 and 20:00, with a flexible schedule across mornings, afternoons, and evenings, including Saturdays as needed.
  • Experience using a laptop and smartphone.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined, capable of working independently.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and a passion for engaging with people.

Essential Qualifications

  • Compliance with UK immigration requirements and Civil Service eligibility criteria.
  • Successful completion of a Disclosure and Barring Service Check.
  • Possession of a full valid UK Driving License.
  • Access to a vehicle for work-related travel.
  • Proof of identity and a reliable broadband internet connection at home.
