WottonunderEdge, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom Office for National Statistics Full time

Position Overview

Are you seeking a role that offers flexible working hours, the opportunity to connect with diverse individuals, and the chance to make a meaningful contribution to your community?

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) stands as the foremost provider of official statistics in the UK, encompassing a wide array of vital economic, social, and demographic subjects. This includes assessing fluctuations in the UK economy, estimating population size and characteristics, and delivering indicators related to price inflation, employment, earnings, crime, and migration.

The Operational Delivery Profession (ODP) is the largest sector within the Civil Service, comprising over 200,000 members engaged in various operational roles across government. These professionals provide essential services that support and safeguard UK citizens both domestically and internationally, contributing to making ONS an excellent workplace.

As a member of ODP, you will benefit from numerous learning and development opportunities, career pathways, and resources designed to enhance your skills and advance your career. This position presents an exciting chance to join a modern, innovative, and inclusive Civil Service profession at the core of public service delivery.

Role Responsibilities

We invite you to join our team as a Field Interviewer for the Office for National Statistics. In this capacity, you will conduct official surveys that inform government policies regarding the nation's status.

Your responsibilities will include visiting selected addresses to gather household contact information and encouraging participation in surveys via online or telephone methods, as well as conducting interviews in respondents' homes.

This position allows for home-based work within a designated radius of your chosen location. You will be expected to manage your travel and workload effectively within your contracted hours. It is essential to consider your ability to meet these requirements based on your home location.

Flexible working hours are a key feature of this role, which is structured around an annualized contract of 1144 hours, approximately equating to 22 hours per week.

To ensure comprehensive outreach, interviews will be conducted between 09:00 and 20:00, with potential administrative and travel tasks outside these hours. Interviewers are required to work across various times of the day, including mornings, afternoons, and evenings, and may be asked to work on Saturdays.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for individuals with a friendly and approachable demeanor, capable of engaging with a wide range of people, both in person and over the phone. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will represent ONS and may need to encourage participation from hesitant individuals.

Additionally, you will be responsible for organizing and managing your workload, with comprehensive training and support provided to assist you in this endeavor.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to transport and carry equipment such as a laptop and survey materials, including walking between addresses and navigating stairs.
  • Work within approximately 40 miles of the designated location.
  • Conduct interviews between 09:00 and 20:00, with a flexible schedule across mornings, afternoons, and evenings, including Saturdays if necessary.
  • Proficient in using a laptop and smartphone.
  • Self-disciplined and motivated, capable of working independently.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and a passion for meeting and engaging with people.

Essential Qualifications

  • Compliance with UK immigration and Civil Service eligibility regulations.
  • Successful completion of a Disclosure and Barring Service Check.
  • Possession of a full valid UK Driving License.
  • Access to a vehicle for work-related purposes.
  • Proof of identity and a reliable broadband internet connection at home.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, the Office for National Statistics contributes towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

As part of the Civil Service, we offer a range of benefits shared with other departments, along with unique offerings designed to support our valued colleagues.

Commitment to Inclusion

At ONS, we strive to attract the best talent from a diverse pool and are proud to be an inclusive employer. We are committed to ensuring fair treatment for all candidates throughout the recruitment process.

During the application process, you will have the opportunity to request any reasonable adjustments needed. If you require assistance or an accessible version of any recruitment materials, please reach out to our recruitment team.
