Overview of Responsibilities

The Role

Are you seeking a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the advancement of fusion energy? As a Health Physics Technician, you will be essential in conducting routine monitoring of surface and airborne contamination to manage radiological and beryllium risks. Your responsibilities will include assessing site operational procedures and responding to urgent requests for Health Physics support related to radiological protection and occupational hygiene. Additionally, you will provide guidance and monitoring in response to incidents, including spills, leaks, and releases of radioactivity, as well as during site emergencies.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Establishing work areas with the appropriate designations for radiological and beryllium control, ensuring that control measures are properly implemented and documented procedures are adhered to as per work permits and authorizations;
  • Offering advice and support to Responsible Officers (ROs) regarding the setup of radiological and beryllium controlled zones tailored to the specific tasks;
  • Collecting and analyzing stack discharge samples for alpha, beta, gamma, tritium, and beryllium contamination;
  • Conducting audits of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) radiography operations to ensure regulatory compliance;
  • Preparing samples for analysis, utilizing liquid scintillation counters, and assisting in laboratory operations as needed;
  • Completing documentation and recording forms for the transfer of materials from radiological and beryllium areas, while producing clear chronological reports on contamination monitoring results.
Qualifications

Essential Requirements:
  • Candidates must possess formal qualifications in radiation safety, such as those from the London Institute, City & Guilds Radiation Safety Practice Stage, or the NVQ equivalent.
  • Applicants should have recent experience in operational radiological protection and a solid understanding of the Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR17).
  • Individuals must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with staff who may have limited knowledge of radiological or beryllium hazards, ensuring adherence to UKAEA standards.
