Job Title: Diabetes Specialist Midwife

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Diabetes Specialist Midwife to join our team at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality, standardized care for women who are experiencing complex pregnancies.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Lead on the midwifery care of women who require specialist diabetes care in pregnancy.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure the service delivers high-quality clinical care for women and pregnant people with diabetes in the outpatient, inpatient, and community setting.
  • Develop and implement care pathways in line with national policy.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to midwives and junior doctors on diabetes care in pregnancy.
  • Hold professional accountability for managing a team of staff delivering high-quality, caring, and compassionate patient-centered care.
  • Build relationships and work closely with the patient safety and quality team to lead on investigations of diabetes in pregnancy incidents and share learning from incidents and changes in practice with staff.
  • Provide public health information and advice to women regarding lifestyle choices, such as smoking, diet, and exercise, and refer on to appropriate support services as required.
  • Liaise between obstetric staff, ward areas, pediatricians, NNU, laboratory staff, to plan delivery of high-risk pregnancies and care of babies.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues across the Directorate to provide both clinical leadership and develop standards to promote high-quality practice.
  • Create an environment of continuous quality improvement.
Requirements:
  • Registered Midwife with significant post-registration experience, including substantial recent experience as a midwife.
  • UK recognized Midwifery degree, or equivalent qualification.
  • Evidence of further professional development.
  • Completion of a leadership course, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Masters, or evidence of postgraduate study.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize.
  • Ability to manage change.
  • Demonstrate ability to influence and motivate the clinical practice of others.
  • Ability to demonstrate a flexible approach to the provision of holistic, clinically effective care.
  • Ability to evidence/demonstrate key values and behaviors in line with the Trust framework.
  • IT literate and able to embrace digital midwifery.
  • Excellent knowledge of medical conditions affecting pregnancy, common fetal abnormalities, screening diagnostic tests, invasive procedures/treatments, chromosomes, and genetics.
  • Previous experience in developing a role/service.
  • Ability to take a leading role in initiating action.
  • Effective leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Counselling skills.
