The Forest Services (FS), part of the Forestry Commission (FC), serves as the Government's leading authority on forestry matters. Role Summary:

The Director of Major Initiatives will report directly to the Head of Strategy and Transformation, overseeing a diverse team of professionals. This role is supported by three direct reports: an IT Development Lead, a Project Manager, and a Business Data Analyst. Additionally, the Director will actively manage a Business Change Manager and a Project Support Officer from the Business Transformation team, alongside a wider team comprising two Business Analysts and two Change Managers.

This position is a well-established role within the Strategy and Transformation department and is being filled for a specified term. The successful candidate will undergo a comprehensive handover process prior to the current postholder's departure.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary purpose of this role is to lead and manage major initiatives within Forest Services, often in collaboration with other divisions within the Defra group. Responsibilities include:

  • Directing and overseeing FS's Major Initiatives.
  • Establishing and actively managing the programme plan for FC-led components of each major initiative.
  • Ensuring alignment of the FC plan with established processes and contributing to their development as necessary.
  • Designing and supporting appropriate governance structures for each major initiative in agreement with senior leadership.
  • Representing FS at relevant forums, working groups, and boards.
  • Identifying resource needs and managing personnel and products required to achieve programme objectives.
  • Tracking overall performance and timelines, ensuring outputs are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality.
  • Monitoring business change support and stakeholder engagement for each major initiative.
  • Collaborating with the Finance Manager to oversee budget management and address financial risks.
  • Managing relationships with internal and external suppliers.
  • Monitoring progress and resolving or escalating issues as necessary.
  • Reporting regularly on progress to the FS Executive Team and other governance bodies.
  • Enhancing the organization's capability in Project Delivery, working closely with the Head of Business Transformation.
  • Contributing to the development of Business Cases and Project/Programme Management Plans.
  • Participating in the FS Portfolio Evaluation Board, providing expertise on Project Delivery.
  • Engaging actively in the Strategy and Transformation leadership team to foster a positive and inclusive culture.
