Lead Researcher in Social Anthropology

We are seeking applications for the role of Senior Research Associate in Social Anthropology. This position is integral to a UKRI funded initiative focusing on small-scale extraction practices in Amazonia, titled INFRACURSIONS: Deregulated Infrastructures of Extraction in Rainforest Frontiers, under the guidance of Dr. Amy Penfield within the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Bristol.
Key Responsibilities
The primary objective of this role is to conduct ethnographic investigations within informal extractive economies in Amazonia. You will collaborate closely with a remote sensing specialist and a dedicated team of ethnographers, gathering qualitative data on the social, legal, and technical aspects of small-scale extraction.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Co-leading the development of an interdisciplinary project workplan and analytical framework.
- Executing data collection in Amazonia related to one or more project themes.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in Social Anthropology or a related field, with a strong foundation in ethnographic methodologies. Exceptional organizational, communication, and presentation skills are essential. You should demonstrate an ability to engage in collaborative interdisciplinary research.
This role necessitates travel to South America for data collection and collaboration with partners. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in South American policy, environmental issues, or extraction, as well as proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese.
