Governance Clerk for Educational Boards

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Richmond and Wandsworth Councils Full time

Position Overview

Governance Clerk for Educational Boards (Professional in Governance)
Salary: £, – £,
Employment Type: Permanent and Casual (Term time)
Work Schedule: Part-time (day per week, flexible hours for casual roles)
Location: Wandsworth
Multiple permanent and casual positions available.

Are you a seasoned governance clerk or possess substantial experience in formal meeting attendance? Richmond and Wandsworth Councils are a reputable organization dedicated to providing professional support and guidance, including clerking services, to educational governing boards in the region and beyond. Due to the ongoing growth of our services, we are looking to recruit additional clerks. Can you assist us in shaping and influencing governing boards on constitutional matters, responsibilities, and authorities?

Role Responsibilities

You will be assigned to various Governing Boards, delivering essential administrative and advisory support to facilitate their strategic direction, hold school leadership accountable, and monitor the financial performance of schools. You will assist in offering a variety of support packages to these educational governing boards, focusing on clerking, governance advice, and information, as well as connections to training opportunities.

You will operate independently while receiving support from the central Governance Services team. Your primary responsibilities will include providing professional advice to Chairs of Governors and Headteachers, ensuring that governing board meetings are conducted effectively, and taking high-quality minutes within a specified timeframe.

Please be aware that while permanent contracts are based on a day per week, there is no fixed schedule for the clerk's duties; you may find yourself busier than one day a week during term time, but less so during school holidays. There will be a need for short-notice meeting coverage or longer-term assignments at designated schools. Demand will fluctuate, but governing boards typically convene mid-week evenings and only during term time.

Required Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Experienced Governance Professional or possess relevant clerking skills with a keen interest in education (additional refresher training will be provided).
  • Strong interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent minute-taking abilities and proficient in IT software, including Microsoft Office and databases.

If you meet the above qualifications and wish to contribute to the effective operation of governing boards, we encourage you to consider this opportunity.
