The Role

We are seeking a Principal Environmental Planner to join our Planning and Development Team. The successful candidate will support a range of planning applications and EIA projects, taking them from initial conception and feasibility, through the consenting process and discharge of planning conditions. The role will involve taking the lead on planning projects, including the submission of applications, monitoring throughout the determination process, responding to comments and discharging planning conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on planning projects, including the submission of applications, monitoring throughout the determination process, responding to comments and discharging planning conditions.
  • Provide advice to clients and the wider team on planning and EIA matters.
  • Liaise with internal and external consultants engaged on planning projects, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Take the lead on community consultation for planning projects.
  • Prepare environmental reports, including EIA Screening Reports, EIA Scoping Reports, Environmental Statements/EIA Report Chapters, and non-technical summaries.
  • Prepare planning reports, including Planning Statements, Design and Access Statements, Pre-Application Consultation Reports, and technical review and QA of planning submission documents.
  • Support the wider Planning and Development Team where necessary.
  • Be actively involved in bid preparation, tender submissions, and business development.
  • Take responsibility for team development, team performance, and coaching/supervision of supporting staff.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess a BSc or MSc in Environmental Planning/EIA/Town Planning or other relevant discipline and have a full UK driving license with a clean driving record. Professional chartership (IEMA/RTPI) or progression towards this would be viewed favorably.

Desirable Experience

  • Proven track record of working in a planning/multi-disciplinary consultancy in the UK.
  • Experience of leading planning and EIA projects for renewables, minerals, waste, residential, or industrial developments.
  • Experience of NSIP/DCO, Section 36, Development of National Significant application types is desirable.
  • Detailed knowledge of planning legislation and processes across the UK.
  • Detailed knowledge of EIA legislation and processes across the UK.
  • Detailed knowledge of environmental assessment techniques and methodologies.
  • Report writing, including EIA Screening Reports, EIA Scoping Reports, or EIA Report/Environmental Statement chapters.
  • Technical review and sign-off of ES/EIA Reports and accompanying planning documents.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable engaging with key project stakeholders, including consultees and the local community.
  • Project management skills.
