Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Lead Theatre Nurse to join our dynamic team at St George's Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This role is pivotal in ensuring the delivery of exceptional nursing care while effectively managing resources and staff within the theatre environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist and stand in for the Theatre Sister or Charge Nurse/ODP, ensuring high standards of nursing care and efficient resource management.
  • Oversee the daily operations and coordination of the theatre department, taking charge of the unit regularly and managing a team of staff with minimal oversight.
  • Facilitate educational and training opportunities for all personnel, including pre-registration students, and provide specialized knowledge in critical care settings.

Main Duties

  • We are looking for enthusiastic Band 5/6 Registered Nurses or Operating Department Practitioners who are eager to enhance their leadership and management capabilities in this innovative specialty.
  • The successful candidate will possess excellent communication skills and thrive in a small, busy, and dedicated team environment.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in scrub roles, including at least 1 year in general surgery theatres at Band 5/6 level, is required.
  • The selected individual will support the Band 7 Team Leader through effective leadership and management, prioritizing and organizing the daily operations of the theatres.
  • A positive attitude focused on supporting and motivating others is essential, along with the ability to address poor practices and behaviors.
  • This role demands confidence in delivering excellence in patient care and day-to-day leadership.
  • The Lead Theatre Nurse will be a visible and assertive presence for staff, patients, and relatives, demonstrating a commitment to safe, high-quality, evidence-based practice.

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Nurse (general) or Operating Department Practitioner.
  • Relevant post-registration experience in theatre settings, particularly in general surgery.
  • Demonstrated awareness of professional responsibilities.
  • Advanced studies leading to a BSc or evidence of further professional development.
  • Completion of a mentorship module or working towards it.
