Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Theatre Nursing Specialist to join our team at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our operating theatre department, you will play a vital role in supporting staff in developing advanced skills and competencies.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Clinical Expertise: Provide expert clinical guidance and supervision to staff in clinical practice, promoting the acquisition of new skills and knowledge.
  2. Education and Development: Collaborate with team leaders and education team members to assess, supervise, and develop nursing staff, ensuring they have the necessary skills and competencies to deliver high-quality patient care.
  3. Education Programmes: Contribute to the planning, development, and implementation of education and training programmes for nursing staff, ensuring they are equipped to meet the needs of patients and the organisation.
  4. Preceptorship and Induction: Jointly coordinate, develop, and manage the Theatre preceptorship course and assist in the co-ordination and development of the Introduction/Induction of new staff in Theatres.
  5. Band 6 Development Programme: Develop and run the Band 6 development programme, ensuring that senior nursing staff have the necessary skills and competencies to lead and manage effectively.
  6. Co-ordination and Development: Be part of the Theatre Coordinator Team and cover any Coordinator shifts when colleagues are unavailable, ensuring seamless delivery of services.
  7. Audit and Review: Carry out audits and reviews of practice and policies within the unit, identifying areas for improvement and implementing changes as necessary.
  8. Clinical Practice Policies: Lead or contribute to the development of clinical practice policies and evidence-based practice, ensuring that they are aligned with Trust and national policies and guidelines.
  9. Implementation of Policies: Lead or contribute to the implementation of new policies and procedures, ensuring that staff are aware of and adhere to them.
Requirements
  1. Clinical Expertise: Demonstrate clinical expertise and credibility in practice for at least 40% of time in the clinical area, working autonomously when required.
  2. Safe Clinical Environment: Ensure the maintenance of a safe clinical environment and working practices conducive to patient care when clinically based.
  3. Patient Care Needs: Assess patient care needs, develop, implement, and evaluate plans of care when working clinically.
  4. Nursing Procedures: Undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with Trust and unit policies and procedures, ensuring that these are understood and adhered to by all staff when supporting staff in clinical areas.
  5. Communication: Maintain and ensure clear and effective communication with patients and relatives, ensuring empathy and reassurance during difficult situations.
  6. Nursing Records: Ensure accurate and comprehensive nursing records are maintained using appropriate documentation.
  7. Multi-Disciplinary Team: Establish effective working relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, promoting good communication and a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
  8. Policies and Guidelines: Review unit policies, guidelines, and competency documents with reference to Trust and national policies and guidelines.
  9. Evidence and Literature Reviews: Carry out reviews of evidence and literature reviews as required for the development of policies and guidelines within the unit.
  10. Policies and Guidelines Development: Develop or contribute to the development of unit policies and guidelines.
  11. Implementation of Policies: Implement or assist with the implementation of new unit and Trust policies and guidelines.
  12. Culture of Learning: Encourage and foster a culture which supports learning from adverse or untoward events and provide relevant training and support.
