Experienced General Practitioner for Acute Care

Position Overview
Job Opportunity for an Acute Care General Practitioner
We are seeking a skilled General Practitioner to join our Acute Care team, focusing on the management of patients with concerning symptoms. This role offers a unique chance to enhance your clinical expertise while contributing to the advancement of healthcare services.
The Acute Care pathway provides a structured and empathetic approach for individuals presenting with symptoms indicative of serious health conditions. This clinical position involves evaluating patients who may have significant health concerns, collaborating with the oncology multidisciplinary team, and fostering the development of services aimed at early detection and intervention.
This position is situated within the Acute GP Service, operating from the Medical SDEC Unit, and involves close collaboration with acute care physicians.
This role is designed to leverage the capabilities of experienced GPs to deliver comprehensive and adaptable patient care. You will have access to the extensive resources of the acute care facility and will work alongside physicians, nursing staff, and allied health professionals, fostering an environment of shared learning and collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
The Medical SDEC Unit is dedicated to ensuring that individuals with urgent care needs receive appropriate treatment in a timely manner.
The primary objective of this role is to manage patients who might otherwise require hospitalization or emergency department services. This is achieved through a thorough assessment process, effective communication, treatment planning, and the creation of innovative patient pathways that serve as alternatives to hospital admission.
About Our Organization
At University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, we value every team member and recognize their contributions to patient care. Our commitment to patient-centered service drives our operations, and we pride ourselves on fostering a culture of innovation, clinical excellence, and outstanding customer service. We offer numerous opportunities for professional growth within a dynamic and supportive environment.
We encourage applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds, as we believe that diversity enriches our teams. We are also open to discussing flexible working arrangements to accommodate work-life balance.
Role Responsibilities
As part of the Medical SDEC team, you will:
- Engage with various departments within the organization, adapting to the evolving needs of the service.
- Provide care at community Urgent Treatment Centres as required.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues, including GPs, Acute Physicians, nursing staff, and allied health professionals.
- Establish strong working relationships with referring clinicians and medical colleagues in secondary care.
- Handle referrals from clinicians and assess the necessity for hospital admission.
- Communicate with the Emergency Department regarding patient management.
- Facilitate appropriate care for patients when admission is not warranted.
- Develop clear management plans for patients upon accepting referrals.
- Conduct on-site assessments for selected patients requiring further diagnostics.
- Maintain high clinical standards and a professional image of the organization.
- Collaborate with consultants and clinical colleagues to enhance non-elective care pathways.
- Contribute to the training and development of GPs, nurses, and advanced practitioners within the organization.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential
- Full registration with the GMC.
- Vocational training certificate or equivalent.
- Evidence of registration on a CCG GP Performers list.
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualifications.
- Previous GPwSI accreditation.
We are looking for a candidate who is adaptable, possesses strong communication skills, and is committed to providing high-quality patient care. If you meet these qualifications and are interested in joining our team, we look forward to your application.
