Reporting to the Professional Head of Freight Safety, the Senior Strategy Lead will oversee essential initiatives, collaborating closely with Professional Heads across the five primary risk domains of the Rail Health and Safety Strategy (RHSS).

These domains encompass Public Behaviour, Operations, Asset Management, Occupational Health and Safety, and Health and Wellbeing.

The position will concentrate on projects and programs that intersect multiple RHSS risk domains.

This role enhances the capacity of the SSH Delivery team, facilitating strategic expansion of both member contributions and commercial consulting endeavors.

The post holder will engage with specialists from various fields while leading in their own area of expertise.

Work may be conducted as part of commercial consulting efforts or as integral components of RSSB core activities funded by member contributions.

Regardless of funding sources, a consulting mindset is vital for the success of this role, as it necessitates managing multiple projects for diverse stakeholders simultaneously.

Regular engagement with senior representatives in member organizations is essential to ensure stakeholder interests are recognized and addressed while simultaneously advocating for the values and objectives of RSSB.

The role will involve:

  • Providing professional oversight of all projects and programs within your portfolio.
  • Defining and leading technical project work related to RHSS or commercial assignments.
  • Leading transformation initiatives for members and clients to integrate new methodologies and digital solutions.
  • Securing and delivering commercial projects that complement our core membership activities.
Responsibilities

  • Serve as a role model for safe working practices in all activities, particularly when engaging on client sites, facilities, or vehicles.
  • Interact, collaborate, and negotiate with senior client representatives as necessary to achieve RHSS objectives.
  • Understand client/end-user challenges, scoping work to address these issues and securing agreement and funding to advance.
  • Develop and maintain a credible pipeline of qualified work related to member contributions or consulting activities.
  • Lead the creation of roadmaps and supporting work programs from concept to implementation, clearly aligned with identified challenges and benefits.
  • Manage and deliver projects and/or programs of work that realize defined benefits for RSSB, members, and customers.
  • Present complex ideas, strategies, and options to a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Ensure delivery of horizon scanning activities and data insights to identify future risks and opportunities for mitigation.
  • Define relevant questions for data analysts to address, shaping the focus of the analysis as an end user and ensuring insights inform work delivery and planning.
  • Contribute to a heightened understanding within RSSB and across the broader industry of the Rail Health and Safety Strategy and its implementation.
  • Lead the preparation of progress reports for your programs and projects to enhance industry engagement with the strategy's delivery.
  • Ensure visibility of Rail Health and Safety Strategy activities, promoting outputs and benefits while collaborating with marketing and engagement teams.
Qualifications

Essential:

  • Expertise in at least one of the following areas: Asset Integrity, Freight Safety, Train Operations Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Passenger Operations Safety, Public Behaviour, or Health and Wellbeing.
  • A degree qualification or equivalent vocational qualification/technical training in a relevant field.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body working towards Chartership.
  • Experience in analyzing and presenting complex ideas, strategies, and options to senior stakeholders, including negotiation and resolution of key issues.
  • Proven experience in engaging with and delivering significant work packages for senior leaders, demonstrating the ability to apply specialist knowledge effectively.
  • Experience in developing and implementing solutions in areas such as strategy, risk management, competence management, organizational change, change management, and operational control.
  • Evidence of successful leadership in significant technical or business change projects (such as digital transformation, organizational, process, or systems change) delivering agreed scope on time and within budget.
  • Depth in identifying, documenting, and applying industry best practices, business models, and standards.
  • Experience in people/line management within a consulting, duty holder, or academic environment.
  • Commitment to customer service, ensuring customer satisfaction is central to our success in achieving shared goals.
  • Effective communication skills, delivering with impact and influence.

Desirable:

  • Chartered Membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Experience in additional areas drawn from Asset Integrity, Freight Safety, Train Operations Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Passenger Operations Safety, Public Behaviour, or Health and Wellbeing.
  • Experience in risk management, risk analysis, and risk assessment.
  • Knowledge of safety management and UK safety regulations.
  • Experience in data analytics or collaboration with data analysts to address defined questions.
  • Experience in leading commercial consulting initiatives.
